Beautifully LOST

LOST has kept me captivated since
September 2004.
The
genesis of LOST took place even before I became a father. It accompanied me
during my company days in Caffeine Design @ Katong, my exciting years
in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Finally, after 121 episodes and 6 years later, LOST drew its curtain on
23rd May 2010.
Over the years, I have developed deep feelings and affections for the
characters. It is going to be difficult to say goodbye to this show. I am going to miss the cast and their stories. Especially the lives of
Kate, John, Sawyer, Benjamin, Desmond, Hugo, Sayid and Jack. For 6 years, I have been waiting for the day to watch its final episode. Just like Jake in the show, I am very desperate to seek the answers to all the "whys and whats". What is the purpose of the island and its inhabitants? Is there really "a reason for everything?" Or are we just simply lost between our own fate and the choices we made? Is there life after life?

Feeling lost? This is one show you either hate or love. The ending was touching, emotional and enlightening. Well scripted and paced, the show ended beautifully. While I am trying to overcome my loss and emptiness, Jake’s words to John strike a deep chord in my heart "It is time that you let go".

Here is my favorite track (from Season 2) and a line from Desmond "See you in another life, mate". Time to make our own kind of music. Enjoy.

Talking about Xperience…

Truly Wahbiang!

After blogging for more than 4 years, it is very strange for me to see my blog amongst the top 10 finalists vying for the "Best Individual Blog" award.
It is even stranger for me to receive so much lovely attention from my friends and strangers. I am not used to have so much "concentrated attention" at a go. The last
time I had such attention is when I addressed the 500-crowd at my
wedding dinner. Perhaps strange isn’t the right word to use. It is just very very very strange. (Thanks to Joanne who nominated me on the last day of the nomination.)

Certainly, all my friends, colleagues and families are excited about my nomination. They are rallying their colleagues, students, clients and even facebook friends to vote for this stranger who named his blog "WAHBIANG". Suddenly, my blog hit rate jumped 500%! And I received many "new MSN friend"
requests. Not to mentioned all those lovely and sweet encouragement from old and new friends.

Unfortunately, these lovely voters also made me the unofficial "Web Master" or "Help Desk" for the SBA Website. 50% of my friends and families do not know to vote and a couple of my friends helped me in the "trouble-shooting". Thanks to Tracy, she created this little 5-Step Guide to assist my friends and well-wishers. (I was rather lazy to create a "voting guide" – in fact, many of the finalists have done excellent guide on their blog – I was thinking of putting the links here. But not so nice, right?)

I have also received many "Golden Tips" from my friends. And not forgetting some of the notable "Complaints":

1) Write more about Elkan and take more photos! He is so cute! My friends and I read your blog becos’ of him!
2) You need to stop writing about your visitors. Write something that "spells Individualism"!
3) You got to lose weight since you are now getting more visitors to your site!
4) Typo, typo, typo – Please check your spelling…grammar
5) Good job on the blog but am sure will win if you post more DG girls! 😛
6) Siow liao! You cannot blog anything about PAP or the government! Later kena from them!
7) Na bei! You are not entering Star Search! Why only 1 vote per day?
8) Aiyooo….. You are already in HK oredi! Why bother to win their first prize to HK?
9) So mafan! Took me 5 minutes to figure out…
10) Shit! I voted for the wrong guy! Paiseh!

Guess my "wahbiang clan" (back in Singapore) suffered the most – for the next 30 days, they find themselves clicking on my yellow banner for no earthly purpose – but just to ensure I still have my little green star. I may be the only one who wish for a slightly different first prize. I wish for a ticket back to Singapore (from HK) instead.

No matter what, it is a good feeling. No, I won’t change the way I write. I have pretty bad memory and I may not remember those little best moments in my daily lives. The best reward for blogging is recording and reading these beautiful
memories. I wrote this blog for my friends. For my family. And most importantly, for my son.

Goodbye Mummies

The meeting of the 4 generation ended yesterday. Mischievous Elkan bid farewell to his grandmother and great-grandmother. It was quite an amazing "life lesson" for him when Auntie Amy showed him the bloodline. It is like a brand new discovery for him to see his daddy’s mum’s mum. And when Elkan found out that his favourite Grand Auntie Amy is the mother
of his fearsome and scary Uncle Chester, he gave us that priceless exclamation "What? You mean you are Uncle Chester’s mum?" (Chester, you should see that expression! It is hilarious!)

Mum got Felicia and I to plan a surprise birthday celebration for Auntie Amy. We decided to do that on their last day in Hong Kong. When the waiter brought in the cake, Elkan ran up to Auntie Amy and forced a hard kiss on her cheek! It was such a spontaneous act! He took Auntie Amy by surprise!

As it was still early, we brought the folks to do last-minute shopping at the Wanchai market and Causeway Bay.

When it was to say goodbye, there wasn’t any sadness or tears. Guess Elkan and his grannies know he is going back to Singapore soon. (And no one to nag about my obesity anymore!) We
have been prepping him about his school graduation and his returning
trip to Singapore. Elkan has enjoyed 3 excellent years outside
Singapore. It is time for him to head home to adjust the dynamic education footprint. And time to spend blissful time with his doting aunties and uncles back home.

Toast to ZephDay!

May is indeed a birthday month! Yesterday, Felicia and I celebrated 2 birthdays – Zeph and Auntie Amy (our 4th and 5th this month!) Guess what, we are celebrating the 6th birthday next week for Scott! Coincidentally, they are all foreigners – David (France), Ethan & Zeph (Malaysia), Auntie Amy, Tracy & Scott (Singapore)!

Zeph organised a karaoke party at Causeway Bay. Without Harshad (he is back home in India for 2 weeks), gone the liquor. The singing session was great and superbly well-balanced. We have a good mix of both English and Chinese hits. For both young and old performers. Elkan and Ethan danced their "Nobody" routine. Danielle and Josephine jammed many "unknown" pop hits. Sherry, Zeph, Felicia, Scott and I honed the "evergreens". Tracy – she handled both genres pretty well. The group later even dedicated "Kiss Goodbye" for Scott and Natalie. Good dinner, great company and lovely tunes kept us charged till 1am.

It is certainly difficult not to gain weight with such regular rituals. Fattening cream cakes, big birthday banquets and lots of late-night drinks and snacks. While these birthday stars are getting older, a couple of us are getting heavier and wider. We got to find new "birthday activity". Mic-lifting and singing birthday/karaoke songs doesn’t help to lose those extra calories. (Mmmm….Better cancel that "Dongguan Birthday Party" idea for mine next month. I was thinking of celebrating with 10 of my favorite mummies and mums.)

My 92nd Darling

My Granny (yes, Elkan’s Great Grandmother), Mother and Auntie Amy are in town. Unlike the many family trips before, this is one memorable trip for many. It is filled with so much drama, laughter and unfortunate accidents.

I took leave and brought the family to Macau and Zhuhai. (Haaa… the ladies barely survived the rocky boat ride.) This is my mother’s first trip to Macau and I got her to try her luck at the Venetian Casino. With just 20 cents, she won HKD500 at the jackpot within the first 10 minutes! Me too, triple my winnings at the black jack table within 15 minutes. This was our shortest stay (20 minutes) in and out of the casino with very very good returns.

However, luck wasn’t with Auntie Amy and Elkan. They had a traumatic experience. A very bad one too. Onlookers Felicia and Tracy witnessed one of the most terrifying incidents this trip. We were cycling at Zhuhai when I lost control and rammed our tricycle into a trash-bin at a considerably speed. The accident happened so fast that I cannot react in time to avoid the collision. Due to the sudden impact, my pillion riders (Elkan and Auntie Amy) flew out of the vehicle and landed on the ground. It was a very very scary sight. Fortunately, Elkan and me suffered minor injuries – bruises and cuts. Auntie Amy suffered the most. She did a superman and landed flat on the ground. The outcome could have been worse if the trash-bin didn’t stop our path. We may landed on the rocks. (Our tricycle was thrashed and we have to leave it behind.)

We decided to call off our "cycling activity" and headed to the green-houses to see the "giant fruits". A more rewarding trip indeed – Auntie Amy and Mother managed to coax one of the farmers to give them some chilies and seeds. They too want to start their own "spicy plantation" back in Singapore. The weather turned bad suddenly and we caught ourselves in the heavy downpour. Nonetheless, we managed to get out of this isolated plantation and headed for our next destination – Shopping!

The trip ended well (minus the "do-more-exercise" nagging and the cycling accident). It was a very relaxing 2-day short trip for the family. Easy money at the casino, superb 2-hour massage and lots of good shopping hours for the ladies. Now, they are already talking about their next return to Zhuhai.

Sweet Farewell

It is time to say goodbye to 2 iron-ladies (friends or nemesis), Natalie and Jaslin. They have done the most unimaginable torture to my body, mind and soul throughout the last 6 months. We spent many days winning ridiculous  "mission impossible" projects. Rounds after rounds…nights after nights…they are one of the many reasons why I went through the amazing 48-hour marathon work.

It was never "love at first sight" with these ladies. Honestly, I was always thinking how I should torture them back in kind. Their crimes were plenty. Natalie made me feel like an appliance. I was her type-writer and her words were fingers, commanding my every input. Jaslin bullied me with her verbal abuses. My goodness, we are Singaporeans and Malaysians. We should love each other, shouldn’t we?

Of course, I do miss them. Now they are gone… how am I going to strike my sweet revenge. I am just in the midst of setting up Bomb Scott with Nat. And before I can do something "evil", Jaslin told me she is leaving too. Girls, sigh… let me repay you my deepest kindness. You know, that kind…

Nat be heading back to KL and Jaslin leaving for Shanghai. Well, guess they will miss me too for I brought out the best and worst in them.

My 1st Gala Premier with the Prince

跨時代 with Jay

Jay released his 10th album today.
His music has always been the bookmarks of my life, accompanied me throughout the last 10 eventful years. From my backpacking days in Australia (2000), my new house (2001), my wedding (2002), my entrepreneur days at Caffeine (2004), the arrival of Elkan (2004) and my expat life in Shanghai and Hong Kong (2006-2010), his music has been my most comforting companion. Here is a piano rendition of his latest hit "說了再見". Another lovely and touching piece. Enjoy.

說了再見 才發現再也見不到  能不能就這樣忍著痛淚不掉  說好陪我到老
又狠往哪裡走  再次擁抱一分一秒都好
