Misty Sea

A Toss to the Greatest CNY Dish!

Originated from China (Guangzhou) and reinvented (and made popular) by our Singapore Master Chef "Than Mui Kai" in 1964, the YuSheng is no doubt a must-have signature dish in CNY. More popular in Singapore and Malaysia, the name "YuSheng" is a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. Friends and families gather together, tossing the "auspicious ingredients" in unison, wishing each other luck and properity for the coming new year.

Finally, after waiting for almost 8 days, we had our 1st 2010 CNY YuSheng Lunch at our favourite City Garden Hotel in Hong Kong. The clan – Scott, Tracy, Mike and Hong Fei flew back this weekend. Thanks to the good wishers – I just learnt the new "F-Word" of the year from Hong Fei and Harshad – 发ING You / Huat You!

Lots of 吉, Lots of 利

"大吉大利" (Da-Ji-Da-Li) is a common Chinese New Year greeting.
Chinese believe that the fruit Mandarin "吉" represents good fortune. Thus, the bigger the fruit, the bigger the fortune one get. Witnessing the kind of amazing luck Harshad had this new year, I began to believe that there may be some truth to such belief. Afterall, he just won himself good money at Macau to pamper himself with a brand new 250GB PS3!

Harshad is certainly no stranger to such superstitions. Today, he invited us to his house. What a pleasant surprise, he has been filling his house (and tummy) with bottles of Mandarin drinks days before Chinese New Year! Check out his special "Mandarin Formation" and his recent big win!

Thee Equals You

I always love handmade gift. And this Valentine, Felicia handmade me a very special set of pink tea-sachets. Packed in special-printed wrapper, all blends were personally packed by her. Through thick and thin, the taste of love is so deep and smooth. Perhaps, a little sugar helps to sweeten the taste of love. (Haaa.. I must go and buy my own sugar-cubes.) The brand? She branded it as "LOVING THEE". This is certainly one brand of tea that doesn’t come with expiry date.

Remember the Whip. The Tiger is Here.

Departure on Reunion Day

I am not used saying goodbye on New Year’s Eve.
It was a strange mixed-feeling inside. I am feeling very happy cos’ I am looking forward to my long holiday in Hong Kong. After 4 weeks of long crazy working hours and tiring trips, I really need a break badly. Therefore, I told myself there will be no long-haul traveling or packed activities (like last CNY in Malaysia) this year – just simply quiet quality time with my wife and kid. (We are planning a couple of free-&-easy days in Macau / Zhuhai over the weekend)

On the other hand, I was feeling very sad (must be the gloomy wet and cold Hong Kong weather). This is our 1st CNY abroad – without our parents and our Singapore friends. Both of my favourite companions – Tracy and Echo flew out today to join their family for CNY. Overnight, the house was so quiet and empty. Lucky for me, Harshad is now in my living room, blasting my speakers with his bloody violent PS3 Game. (Those gun-shots sound so much like the fire crackers!) Everyone I know are now outside Hong Kong! (Friends like Scott, Hong Fei, Zeph and my cousin Tao) While there are plenty of CNY festive elements around us, it is the presence of friends and families that warm up the festive.

Sending Echo off was rather difficult. Elkan couldn’t hold back his emotions and that affected both Echo and me. Honestly, I was feeling very sad to say bye to her. Despite her lowest period, Echo was very kind and lovely towards my family, especially to Elkan. Over the past 10 days, she was like a second nanny – spoiling my son with toys and undivided attention. No wonder, Elkan missed her so much now.

Perhaps Kalinda and my Cousin Yei are right – we are getting old. Got to spend these few days wisely and happily! Afterall, I am not sure what I am celebrating tomorrow. Valentine Day or New Year Day? That will depend what kind of meals Felicia will be baking tomorrow. Fusion, I would say.

Forrest Gump Restaurant

(Photo Taken: Bubba Gump Restaurant (inspired by the movie "Forrest Gump") at The Peak, Hong Kong. The speciality? Lots of shrimps – baked, deep-fried or boiled. Guess the name of their waiters? No brainer, they are all called "Forrest". A good place to dine, overlooking the skyline of Hong Kong. Great service with big portion of food.)

Our 84th-85th HK Visitor – Wendy and Leonard!

It has been 5 long years since we last met. Surely, Wendy and I went through many roller-coaster rides. Not sure why? I guess this is how fate planned how our paths. We have survived many road-blocks and also many many detours. We have been in and out of friendship for all kinds of misunderstandings. And certainly, Wendy is a very very unique friend of mine and it is very strange and difficult to describe our friendship. Time is often the best remedy. It can heal the most difficult memories and also create many more moment of possibilities.Over the last 2 years, Wendy has initiated a couple of meetings to meet up with me in Shanghai. But timing was never ideal for both of us. (However, I bet we spent many hours looking at each other’s webpages – We do have one thing in common – it is our love for photography! And Wendy is such a good photographer.)

Finally, we get to meet each other in Hong Kong this week. And she came to us with a very blissful piece of news – that is her 2011 wedding to Leonard! (Congrats, my friend!) Despite my super-hectic schedule (yes, it was another insane over-midnight and weekends working marathon), I am so happy that we managed to meet up twice. Thanks to our friendly and very understanding visitors, they came by our office at Central and waited for us. On their last night in Hong Kong, we brought them to the Peak for dinner. And when they left, we kinda miss their presence.
