Back to Infinity and Beyond

Yes, I am back in May again. This time for work, for casting a vote and celebrating Mother’s Day with my 2 mums and aunt. This is my shortest May visit ever – 5 days in exact – but this is one special visit of many “firsts” (voting and our dip in the infinity pool) and wonderful gatherings with my friends (Danielle, Wenxu, HongFei, Sherry, Kalinda, Juliana, Duuk, Meijie and Gareth!)

This is the first time I exercise my rights to vote. Yesterday morning, we went back to my old neighborhood to cast our votes. It has been almost 5 years since I last visited my estate! So many new roads and amenities. I saw many familiar faces and they have aged so much. I saw the uncle who used to sell sugar-cane drink at the hawker center at the voting center – but he was in a wheel-chair looking frail. From a distant, I took a glance at my flat. Sure miss those days back at home. We have been renting out that space for the last 4 years.

Right after my voting, my ex-business buddy Richard (and Chin) drove by and brought us to eat my favorite Bak Ku Teh pork soup at Joo Chiat. Later in the afternoon, I met 2 good friends from Shanghai – Johnny and Ming were in town – and we met over a short meal at Bugis.

My original plan was to bring Felicia and Elkan to Bintan for a short weekend getaway.
But thanks to my company’s special corporate hotel rates, I managed to get us a good (and big) city-view room at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. As we are staying at the Sands, we decided to celebrate our Mother’s Day lunch at the hotel. I was right, my family and guests love the pool and the SkyPark! They visited us last evening and we showed them around the hotel. We have free access passes to the SkyPark and the Infinity Pool – we were just right in time to catch the 270-degree panorama sunset view on the 57th-floor.

The “Infinity Pool” is the main reason why we are here. This is the world’s largest pool at 200m high! Elkan, Felicia, Qiqi, Meijie and I had such a great time at the pool. It is 100% visually-stunning! The “infinity pool”, the city landscape and the many many hot bods and chicks! The experience is beyond words.

Shanghai Girl Returns

Right after Felicia, Elkan and Jean, Echo was our 4th “Resident” in our new Central apartment. She was in town over the weekend (48 hours to be exact). Living under one roof with these 2 Shanghainese-Singaporean girls wasn’t easy, I was slave to them for 2 days – mentally and physically. Good thing I have Harshad to share the pain.

The Bachelor’s Lair

Finally, our golden bachelor Meijie got his first lair. And we were lucky to be the his first visitors to grace his new home! After so many years in congested Shanghai and Hong Kong, I wasn’t used to the big space (especially the big toilet and kitchen!) We were all so excited and we confused him with so many ideas how to renovate his new space! Duuk was suggesting to convert the storeroom into a small bedroom. I was thinking of putting a small pond outside his corridor. Gareth was already contemplating to convert one of Meijie’s bedrooms into a pole-dancing studio for Kalinda to practice. Elkan was walking around the empty house, reporting ghost & insect encounters. Poor Meijie.

A Big Wahbiang Birthday Gathering

Today is the seventh day of Chinese New Year
, also known as “renri” 人日 (Human Day). The Chinese believe that this is the day when Man was created. So, it is everyone’s birthday today! (Well, according to some Christians, Adam was created by God between the 6-8th Day). This is also the original day when Yusheng (鱼生), a popular Singapore festive dish is tossed (lo hei 撈起) for good health, wealth and prosperity.

Today marks a very special day for the Wahbiang Clan too.
Today, we celebrated Yifu’s belated 36th birthday. It is also the actual 4th birthday of Issac Chen (Gareth’s second son). Thanks to all, this is our largest (and most expensive) Chinese New Year gathering since 2005! The dinner was very lively, noisy and messy! (It was like a wedding dinner – starting from 7:45pm to 11pm – we have late-comers, smoky cake walk-in, 10-course dining, hongbaos etc)

The boys were a nightmare – many times, we have to use “Gareth” (our very own “Gargamel”) to tame the boys. Elkan and Jacob pulled another unexpected prank – this time on poor Yixi. They peppered (yes pepper!) an innocent-looking “Pocky White Chocolate Stick” and gave it to Yixi to eat! (When we left the restaurant, the two boys were making a chili drink quietly at the side! Darn boys!)

In total, we have a total of 16 adults and 9 kids tonight!!!
(absence: Joanne, Juliana, Duuk, Wendy, Tracy and MC Family). Imagine if we have the full clan present, that will be a total of 35 people! Our clan has indeed prospered and expanded over the years! (Yes, we should book a private ball room next year for our gathering! Wait a few more years, we can organise a tele-match for the families!)

Flying Colours at the Marina Barrage

We haven’t seen our good friend, Kendrick since 2005. Last Saturday, Kendrick bought us dinner at Citylink and played “tour leader” for the night. He was thinking hard where to bring us. He listed down many new places for us to pick and choose. Finally, he named one place that was “new” to both of us – the Marina Barrage.

It was a long dark winding road to the Barrage. On our way there, Kendrick told us that we can “fly kite” at the barrage. I took it literately as a local slang for “doing nothing”. When we arrived at the Barrage, we saw many colourful lights floating in the night sky. He was right – people do come here at night to fly kite! There were a lot of people there that night! Like a pair of “sua-ku 山龟”, Felicia and I were really amazed by the beautiful flying lights! Wow! This is awesome! (Shame on my Wahbiang buddies, the barrage has been opened since 2008 and none of them brought us there!)

This is a perfect spot to view the new and old skyline of Singapore – be it during the day or at night. While we were there, we can see lots of constructions at the new Singapore Downtown. The Singapore Flyer, the Marina Bay Sands, the skyscrapers at the Raffles Place CBD and our Esplanade are just so beautiful. This is a great place to chill out – spacious, windy and quiet!

Happy Bobo Day!

The Christmas Baby

Meet Dylan Tan Tze Le (陈梓乐)‏ – our new 3rd Gareth Mini who was born on Christmas Day last week. Congratulations to both Gareth and Ivy!

A Special Christmas Blog by Kalinda

This year, Wahbiang organised a very different and creative Christmas Party. A boardgame that was as large as the living room for everyone to play. This is one Christmas when the clan celebrated a new generation of Wahbiang. In fact, it was the kids who stole the show that night.

I couldn’t think of anyone more special than Kalinda to word this special blog entry. She was one of the organisers, the party photographer and my closest friend. Kal, thanks for gracing my last blog entry for the year at 2am – just in time before my holiday trip to Kaohsiung.

A CHRISTMAS BLOG BY KALINDA
26th Dec 2010

It’s the time of the year when we have to rack our brains and get our creative juices to start oozing again; it’s Wahbiang Christmas party time!

A Christmas gathering during this festive time of the year is a Wahbiang practice that we’ve been making an effort to maintain for many years now; it is a special time for us. As the years progressed, our gatherings evolved and slowly we have integrated a gifts exchange game as the highlight. It’s definitely getting more challenging to plan for a game that’s fun for all as more ideas are being used up through the years. Not forgetting having more factors to consider with the addition of more and more little ones running around too.

Unlike previous years, this time we decided to conjure an idea that allows the involvement of both organizers and players for more interactive fun. With that thought in mind and after putting three heads together, the birth of a human board game with a blend of the classics like Snake and Ladder, Monopoly and UNO was born. It was a big idea; individuals were used as the walking tokens.

With the convenience of a location after one by one got married and have their own love nest, we have been rotating among the few houses over the past few years. This year, we have Karen and Charlie as our hospitable hosts.

After moving the furniture aside to make space, we started the evening piecing up the huge game board that Juliana had beautifully designed on the floor. Towards the end when the full picture is starting to take shape, we realized that we have a row missing! Felt a tinge of disappointment with the blunder, but we did not fret for long as this was the time we activated our artists, MC and Juliana, to hand draw the left out boxes, displaying their drawing skills with limited markers and crayons borrowed from Karen’s son’s collection. With the game board creatively and spontaneously settled, we moved on to set up the mini buffet we catered and a nice dinner begins.

The game started after satisfying the stomachs of the big ones, and more importantly the little ones. Mystery presents were gathered and rules were explained by Meijie, the game master with much effort and the one and a half hours of fun rolled on from there. Besides picking up the game cards along the way, to summon more smiles on the faces, goodie bags were placed randomly waiting to be taken. Not long into the game, Meijie emerged as our first lucky winner. To top up the fun, we’ve included a bonus cash lucky dip after the game and we’ve got Charlie, Juliana and Yixi as our three fortunate winners!

The night slipped past with a rather chaotic and rowdy atmosphere. Earlier part of the evening we had a few small vehicles controlled by tyrannic little drivers who abide to no rules, zooming around haphazardly, coupled with excited little pedestrians paying no heed to traffic, trampling all over the game board crumpling the cards. Following on the evening, while numbers from one to six were recited by the players every time after the giant dice is rolled, with a mix of surprised and exaggerated agitated tones that built up the fun when one gets kicked back to starting point, the background rang with substantial high pitched screams and cries of little boys and girls as they get engrossed in their little disputes over toys and childish bickering. Distracted players had to double their roles as discipline masters, raising their voices in a futile attempt to tame the situation. Parents busied themselves with their kids in hope to engage their interest and attention long enough.

Despite having said all that, we all had our joyous moments, sharing and laughing together. Although there were some minor hiccups and the game play was not perfect (we had to improvise some rules along the way) but all of that didn’t matter as we gathered in the name of fun and bonding. Our Christmas gathering that lasted five hours soon came to an end. The children went home happily after their share of innocent fun, bringing back with them lots of gifts. And as for the rest of us, we brought back yet another memory that will remain close to our hearts.

It was yet another blessed Christmas with a chance to show how much we value this precious friendship that we share and the bond keeps building. Looking forward to the next time when we all will come together as one again.

Meeting an old friend on Christmas Eve

Life is always full of delightful surprises and coincidences. Thanks to the new Fate (aka Facebook), Mindy (aka Mingyi) and I were able to reconnect with each other after almost 20 years – here in Hong Kong on Christmas Eve! The last time we met each other was back in 1991 – that was when we were 16 or 17. I can never ever imagine a meeting like this.

During our chat, I realised there are many similarities between us – Back in Poly days, Mindy studied in building and I was in architecture. She also worked in Hong Kong for 3 years before moving back to Singapore. We both have a son. And exactly like our situation, Mindy’s husband is currently working in Hong Kong while she and her only son are back in Singapore. Guess what? Mindy and her son are staying 1 street away from Felicia and Elkan!

During our 1-hour lunch, we are able to click with one another instantly. She also shared her experience about their distant-relationship and how they manage to cope as a family. God is certainly watching over me.

It is a pity Fate didn’t arrange this meeting 2 weeks earlier. Mindy was here since late November. Mindy, Yifu, Meijie and I would have meet up! She will be flying back to Singapore on 31st Dec. No matter what, it is good to meet a long-lost friend. Especially on a Christmas Eve overseas.

Goodbye on a Rainy Day

I have lost count how many times we have said goodbye to one another. (Perth, Shanghai, Singapore and now here in Hong Kong). And I thought I am so used to saying goodbye to both of them. I thought to myself that this was only a short 6-month separation and it won’t be as bad as the one in 2006. I was so wrong about my thoughts. Goodbyes are painful – no matter how many times we have been through.

Thankfully, my Singapore buddies (Yifu, Meijie and Lilian) were in town to lend their support. Harshad and Tracy (and dad) also came to send them off. It was a big happy (and noisy) farewell. I thought their company will help to ease (and distract) the sadness. It was pretty okay from our house to the airport. Elkan was very happy today, he was looking forward to go home to meet his granny and cousins. Normally, he was the one crying at the departure gate and Felicia and me had to comfort him. It was the adults who were in tears and he comforting both of us.

Elkan was acting pretty different (very sensible and mature) today.
He knew he was leaving Hong Kong for good and he said many nice things to cheer me up. He is always a happy kid. When I asked him if he will missed me, he said I will miss him more. He said he will behave well so he fly back soon to play video games with me. He also left me with a lot of written “I love you, daddy” notes. Minutes before the departure, Elkan and me went to the loo. My mind was so occupied with my work and their departure that I left my pouch in the loo. I left the loo first. Elkan saw the cleaner picked up my pouch. He instinctively guessed it was my pouch and took it from the cleaner. He passed the pouch to me and said “Is that yours? I saw a uncle holding it and I told him it is yours. Daddy, please be careful, can?”

At the departure gate when we bid farewell to them, the smile on Elkan’s face slowly diminished. He dropped his backpack and started whining for me “I want daddy, I want daddy”. It was an unbearable moment. Holding back the tears, I gave him a tight hug and told him I will be back very soon. Do well, my son and take care, I said. I looked at Felicia, her eyes were wet. So were Tracy (and Harshad). It was an emotional moment for all of us. After all, we have been through so many good happy days in Hong Kong. For me, it was goodbye to my son and wife – Elkan is starting school in 2 weeks’ time – they had been on the road with me for 3 years. For Tracy and Harshad, it was goodbye to their favorite buddy. Some one who they doted so much during their stay in Hong Kong.

Meijie came to give me a hug while Felicia and Elkan went through the gate. They say big men don’t cry. I can’t help it. It breaks my heart to see my son and wife so sad. Harshad kept patting on my back, comforting me. Tracy’s dad tried to calm the situation with a good joke. “Hey, those weren’t tears of sadness. It’s tears of joys. You are a free man now!” Yes, today is my Independent Day!

I hate goodbyes. Especially on a rainy day when Christmas is just around the corner.

(Thank you all who came for the farewell office lunch and wrote us all those encouraging notes on Facebook and sms. We are really touched and blessed to have you guys around. It is moment like this that teaches us to cherish and appreciate each other more. And thanks Harshad, Meijie, Tracy, Yifu, Lilian for popping by our house today. Our Pink Christmas Tree is completed now – with all the farewell Polaroids!)
