Reunion – Class of 86

For years, I am so used of being called “Joe” that I almost forgotten my Chinese name. Even my mum doesn’t call me by that name, she calls me as “Peng”. The only time when someone calls me by my Chinese name is when they are really angry with me.

You can imagine the surprise look on my face when someone called me by my Chinese name on the street. Instinctively, it must be someone from the past. Someone close and someone familiar.

It was Wei Qiang, my kindergarten friend. He was one of my closest primary school buddies and the captain of our volleyball team from 1985-1986. Wei Qiang led the team into the National Finals – one of the proudest moments in my childhood. (Don’t think my parents know about that.) Those were our happiest and most glorious days. We were the champions of the Eastern District. Our team was the most successful volleyball team in Kuo Chuan Presbyterian school. We were the legends. (Too bad, most of the guys were in the all-boy class, we didn’t get any special attention from the girls.)

We went on our separate roads after PSLE. His family moved out of the neighborhood and we lost contact. The last time we met was almost 20 years ago at the Air Force training school. He was an officer cadet and I was servicing my last months at the admin dept.

I was so happy to see him! That familiar smile, the familiar bond of yesteryears. It felt so good to embrace a lost brother of the past. We exchanged our Facebook IDs and I connected Wei Qiang with the rest of the old PBS boys and girls.

Last Sat, some of the PBS boys decided to gather at Jago Coffee Shop. Francis Toh (another kindergarten friend of ours) is the owner of the famous Jago Carrot Cake stall. Simon, Joachim, Wei Qiang (Eric), Caofa (Victor) and I decided to give Francis a surprise! After all, they haven’t meet for over 25 years!

Over the past few days, Facebook reconnected all the primary school friends. We setup a alumni group. Photos, stories and secrets were shared. It is a great feeling to see the old clan of yesterday active today.

Fate was kind to me for a second time. I bumped into another old PBS friend, William, on my last night in Singapore. Life is just so amazing. Just when you thought your old friends are a past distant away, they turned up at every corner unexpectedly.

Never judge a building by its facade – Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands Hotel is one of the most iconic buildings in Singapore. It’s unique shaped roof makes it one of the most recognizable casino-hotels in the world.

Despite having such fame locally and internationally, Marina Bay Sands fails to bring its 5 stars appeal into its service. I have stayed there 3 times and the experience was just disappointing. I wish the management put in more efforts in its hotel services. Here are my top Hates about Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

3pm Check-In
This is the most inconvenient and unfriendly policy, creating massive bottleneck and extremely long waiting time for guests checking in. For tourists who have just landed in Singapore, they find themselves stranded at the lobby. Queuing time takes up to 30 minutes. It is just unacceptable.

Inferior Reception Lobby
The lobby is an interior insult to its iconic exterior. The main hotel reception at Tower 1 is a plain, boring, uninspiring, institutional, flat design.

Waiting Time Music Performance
These are good respected musicians. Give them a proper stage and central space to indulge the waiting guests. Now, they are almost invisible and inaudible.

Shower Hot/Cold Knob
This is the most ridiculous feature in the hotel room. To adjust water temperature, one has to press the red button down and turn the knob. The knob was so tight that it took me massive strength to turn it. I don’t get it. What’s so special about this design that it creates so much inconvenience for the user.

Auto-Billing In-Room Mini Fridge
I was told by my colleagues that I should avoid opening the mini fridge. Cos there is a 10-sec auto-billing mechanic. Any item that is removed for more than 10 seconds will be considered as consumed and billed. Sneaky and very unthoughtful.

Outdoor Taxi Stand / Valet Parking Sofas
This is a posh hotel. Why are the guests waiting in the hot humid weather outdoor when the hotel can simply build an air-con waiting lobby. The valet parking sofas look like discarded old furniture in the middle of the road. It is just too odd looking for me.

Massive Jams at Tower 1
Somehow, this happened at every night during peak hours. There should be something the traffic controllers can do to smoother the flow. It is just ridiculous to wait 15 mins in the cab when we are just 100m away.

Many of my friends who stayed at Marina Bay Sands shared similar disappointment. It is just apathy that such a grand and iconic landmark holds little substance and style in its offerings. Never judge a building by its facade.

Reunion at Bintan

I always love the tranquillity of a sunny, breezy, peaceful beach life. I often picture myself buying a nice retiring pool villa at some remote beach towns, enjoying a quiet retreat with my family. It was Elkan’s March school holiday, Felicia booked a 3-day beach resort getaway at Bintan Lagoon Resorts. Since our last Bintan trip back in September 2011, I have been longing to return to its pristine beaches and world-class resorts. Elkan was as excited as us as he wanted to go swimming and kayaking by the beach.

It was a great retreat for the family. The resort is just 1 hour away from Singapore. The ferry brought us right to Bintan Lagoon Resorts – the immigration is located within the resort’s compound, there is no need to take any bus transfer. From the immigration office, it took us only 2-minute walk to check in into our room. Fresh morning air, powdery sands, clear waters, breezy shades under the coconut trees and super warm Indonesian hospitality, it’s a paradise here. I must say Bintan Lagoon Resorts are as good (but a lot cheaper) as those 5-stars Shangri-La Beach Resorts I have stayed. Life was so peaceful and relaxing. Felicia and I spent the afternoon lazing under the shades, watching Elkan by the pool and at the beach. Unfortunately, work tailed me to Bintan. Occasionally  I have to take a break from my paradise to answer some important work matters. Nevertheless, it was still a wholesome break for me – a good recharge I need for the coming months.

One of the sweetest things that happened in Bintan was bumping into my favourite cousin and childhood friend, Qianqian. She was holidaying with her husband and son at the resort too! Felicia spotted her at the pool and brought her to see me. I was so happy and surprised to see her! It has been over 5 years since we last met! Fate has been a great buddy of mine lately! (Unbelievably, Fate managed to bring all my Katong friends together just a few days ago!) Both of our sons connected with one another immediately! Elkan didn’t even know the other boy is his cousin! The boys had so much fun at the pool that Elkan kept asking for his newly-found cousin the next morning! Felicia and I had a great time catching up with my cousin and her husband over dinner!

It was a very rewarding trip for the family. Elkan mastered a new skill and successfully kayaked solo (and he met a new friend / cousin!). Felicia and I enjoyed a good break – something that we both needed badly before the hectic months of April and May. And best of all, we met up with Qianqian and her beautiful family. Enjoy our holiday fun video below.

The Art of the Brick Exhibition Singapore

Last evening, Felicia brought us to a Lego Art Exhibition. It is unlike anything I have seen before! Simply mind-blowing and unexpectedly impressive! Highly rated as the “Top 10 Global Must See Exhibitions” by CNN.com, artist Nathan Sawaya created 52 stunning and original art sculptures using the normal Lego plastic bricks as the sole art medium. The “Art of the Brick” exhibition is currently exhibited at the Art Science Museum, Marina Bay Sand Singapore. One of the most impressive exhibits is the 6m long Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton and the iconic sculpture “Yellow”. I am so glad to be back in Singapore to catch this magnificent show before it ends in May. The Art of the Brick is truly a great exhibition worth the money and time! Never underestimate the power of the creative mind and the little Lego brick. It does wonders beyond our imaginations.

Working with award-winning photographer Dean West, the exhibition “In Pieces” (see below) just finished its show from 28 Feb – 17 Mar 2013 at New York City. Check out more inspiring art forms at http://brickartist.com/.

A Jar of Love – Possibly the World’s Longest Valentine’s Day Card

No words can ever describe the emotions I felt when I opened this special jar of love. This Valentine’s Day, Felicia made me a very special gift. It is an extraordinary card like no others. Awaiting the verification by the official Guinness Book World of Records, my wife may have possibly made me the world’s longest Valentine’s Day card ever!

Painstakingly and devotionally , Felicia created a 20m-photographic card of our love journey. Each metre represents one year of our togetherness. 2013 marked our 20th Anniversary. From our very first photo taken in 1993 to the most recents ones taken during our last Christmas Europe holidays in Dec 2012, Felicia digitally arranged and stitched every photograph chronologically. From our schooling days to my army days, our wedding days to parenthood, from Shanghai to Hong Kong – every chapter of our lives unrolled right in front of my eyes. Inch after inch, photo after photo, both us sat quietly on the bed, rewinding and reliving the best moments of our lives. If only we can measure the length of love we travelled, 20 metres will never be enough. I will never forget the words Felicia wrote at the beginning of the scroll. It says, “Love Begins…when Bobo loves Jojo”. This will be one scroll we will be extending year after year, inch after inch.

Wahbiang’s “Gathering of the Year”

Today – We had one of the largest Wahbiang gatherings ever! A total of  33.5 pax (14.5 kids and 19 adults)! We were just short of Joanne (away in Batam) and Tracy (away in Cebu) to complete this gathering! Why 14.5 kids? Well, we just found out that Jimmy and Serene are expecting their 2nd child! Congrats to both of them! Just like what Karen said on WeChat, this may be Wahbiang’s “Photo of the Year”! (We should switch off the TV – the kids were all looking at the screen instead of the camera. Hahahah…)

Thanks to Duuk and Juliana who played such great host to our growing clan, we had such an enjoyable time together! Food (steamboat and the side dishes) was excellent! The Lo-Hei tossing moment was unforgettable! Zach and Juliana were sprinkled with good fortune sesame seeds! This was also a very special CNY gathering, we celebrated MC and Yifu’s birthday. Meijie and Joey received their last pre-wedding hongbaos. For one very rare occasion  the children didn’t give the adults any headache. Unlike the last Eunos gathering, the kids drove the parents crazy! This time, the kids played in an orderly manner – all thanks to mountains of toys at our host’s house. What a huge difference it made!

From the post-gathering messages on Wechat, everyone enjoyed themselves. Hopefully, we didn’t trash up our host’s home too badly. Now, the clan is looking forward to Meijie and Joey‘s wedding on 17th March! Surely, this will be the last Wahbiang Golden Bachelor’s matrimony of our generation. Time to plan a big B-Party for both Joey and Meijie!

CNY Reunion in Sentosa

It has been 6 long weeks (the longest break ever) since I posted my last blog. Apology for the long absence away from my blog, I was too overwhelmed with work and new projects! Mostly, it was work, work and more work (tax was record high and bonus was terribly lousy this year).  Nothing really special or remarkable happened. Over the past few weeks, I attended a lot of business dinners and a short weekend trip to Macau. The only heart-stopping moment was when my landlord sent me a notice to increase the rent.

It is so good to be home. Time flies, my last home trip was more than 6 months ago (back in June last year to attend my late granny’s funeral). This year, my parents decided to spend CNY in Singapore. This is the biggest family reunion we had in years. Leon and his wife and baby flew back from Xiamen to spend CNY with the family. Instead of the traditional house-visiting, we spent the 1st and 2nd day of Lunar New Year together at Sentosa. The family booked 5 rooms at Festive Hotel. That saved us the hassle of traveling to visit each other’s house – our rooms were just meters away! We left the room doors open – the adults were chatting and eating from room to room. The kids loved it too – they were playing hide-&-seek and were running from room to room, spraying water guns all over the places.

Apparently, there were other families like ours, spending their CNY Reunions at the hotel. There are so much things to do at Sentosa. On the 2nd day, the kids went swimming at the Hardrock Hotel’s beach-pool. I accompanied dad and mum to visit the Sentosa Flower Festival. Sentosa was super-packed with people, there were long queues everywhere (hotels, casino, tram-stations, restaurants and tourist attractions). We have to wait for more than an hour for our CNY dinner. Despite the frequent downpour, many Singaporeans and tourists came to gamble on the first day. The casino was flooded with fortune-seekers who wanted to try their luck on the 1st day of CNY. Dad and I took less than 40 minutes to recover the $200 entry fees (for two of us) plus an additional $300 winnings. What a great way to start this CNY – bonding and winning!

Missing All of You This Christmas

Maybe we have been away for a long time. Christmas is so different without the company of friends and family. It is so much quieter this year without the presence of my wahbiang buddies, Singapore family and that noisy HK indian buddy. So many of them are away on holidays (Joanne in Phuket, Cousin Yei & Echo in Shanghai, Chester in Japan, Leon and family in Xiamen, Harshad and Tracy in Bhutan, Yifu & Family in Hong Kong) with their friends and families. I guess this is a pretty lonely and quiet Christmas season for many. I received more “I miss you” messages than “Merry Christmas”. Just finished my late wee-hour greeting chats with Echo and Aunty Amy, we certainly need to organise a big gathering next year. For them, too, it has been a very quiet Christmas.

On Christmas’ Eve, I tried to connect everyone to gather some noise and “festive moods” on mobile through WeChat. Not ideal but this helps to connect the whole clan together. Thankfully, I managed to gather all my family and a handful of my friends. (I shouldn’t have deleted my Whatsapp but I won’t bow down to intrusion of privacy! So, Chester, Kalinda, Karen and Juliana – please install WeChat!). I asked everyone to send me their Christmas moments (be it a card, photo or even a voice memo!) Thanks to all, I managed to receive lots of amusing voice memos and many beautiful happy photos. It is always a great joy to see Wahbiang’s Annual Christmas Gathering (since 1992!). While the adults are away and mellowing down, our kids are making the gathering bigger and filling the void with their laughters and noise. Like what Felicia said “Someday when the kids are going for their own Christmas parties, will leave us the same old Wahbiang gang.”

It is becoming a tradition in our household. Thanks to Felicia, she put up a new “Christmas Tree-Wall” at my tiny apartment this year. It reminded me of our wonderful Europe trip – a Eiffel Tower Christmas Tree! It blinks every night. Another special mention – I got her to design this year’s OgilvyAction’s DIY 3D Christmas Card (and big thanks to an old friend Timmy for sponsoring the production!). Thanks to all my lovely clients and friends for taking the effort to make the cards and sent me those photos! (I am so glad that my friends received the cards on time – sorry, we have been away for our tour.. we sent them out late!).

While this is the season to get together with your loved ones and spread laughters, joys and love, it is also the time of the year when we reflect on what we accomplished and learnt for the past year. While we are celebrating this special day, do remember there are so many more unfortunate people out there who need our constant attention and help. Do spend some time and teach our children the origins of this special day. It is more than “gifting”. It is all above giving. That is the best gift we gave as parents. It is a tradition and values we must build in our children. Be thoughtful, be kind, be selfless and be good.

Now, we are looking forward to the return of Aunty Bay and Uncle Harshad. It is no fun celebrating and unwrapping our Christmas gifts without them. For the least, Elkan can wait till their return. After all, there are 12 days of Christmas and we have a brand new world to celebrate! It will be a happier 2013. I can hear wedding bells and birthday songs.

Merry Christmas to all of you. I miss you guys so much.

The Making of “Lionnel & Joey” (Teaser)

Behind every love story, there is always a twisted version. The minute I received these candid photos from Joey, I decided to publish them into a beautiful movie storyboard. I thought of an uncanny tale of a “38-year-old golden virgin” and “Sinderella” plus “hangover”. Surely it is one epic love story – as twisted as Twilight. Your hearts & show must go on. I bet Lionnel and Joey are speechless right now (after seeing this stunning post on my blog!).

Days and Nights at the Museums

BLOG BY FELICIA (29th August 2012)

Most of us would have thought the museums would be boring, seeing old, historical stuffs. The Singapore Museums have done a great job and installed exhibits not just for the historical values. They have exhibits for family and kids too! There were many good programs and mostly interactive ones that were really interesting and kids loved it!

Here’s our 4 days trip to the Museums over 2 weeks!

The Peranakan Museum
(Armenian Street)

Thinking it would be just a showcase of old Peranakan heritage objects, furniture and outfits, I didn’t have much expectation. But I had always wanted to come coz the museum building was my formal primary school (Tao Nan School) building back in 1912! By the time I enrolled in this school, she had moved to her second home at Marine Parade.

Elkan and Jovin were wondering around this small three-stories building looking out for motifs to be embossed on their little handouts where upon completion of all the motifs found in the museum, they will receive a small gift! They get to do some fun ink stampings on postcards. And we watching Elkan and Jovin did a stint pretending to be a character in “Emily of Emerald Hill”, a famous play about a young Peranakan bride in the 20th century. They were both all dressed up in the sarong and kebaya! After the stint is recorded, we get to view other videos, and vote our favorite!

My mum and me walked around looking and admiring the exhibits. I must say the exhibits was really a great collection and well presented. The famous bead works on their traditional shoes was amazing! So much details made from the tiny beads. We came visit this museum two days in a row as Elkan wanted to do more embossing and try the stint again, pretending to be another character. We spent a good 2 hours there each visit. Better than straying in the malls!

Singapore Art Museum at Q8
(Queen Street)

This is a museum just for kids! There was not many exhibits but more interactive and little fun activities to engage your kids with handy crafts and drawings. There was a round table tennis table which Joe had blogged before. Unfortunately, when Joe was back then, the museum was closed that day. So we came back again.

A giant octopus that flashes colourful lights from its body when it sensed that you are near! A thrill for young toddlers. Grow a night garden in the city! Learn to fold flower and butterfly origami and grow them in a glowing night garden. Scream…. kids! And see what comes out from your screams on the screen! Doreamon, flowers, cartoons or super heros?? Dance silly and have a good laugh! Save mother earth, colour and plant your own trees on the wall. Use mummy’s cloths peg from the kitchen and make nice repeat patterns on a piece of clay.

We went there twice too. Elkan sweats it out with other kids in a game of table tennis at the outdoor round table tennis table. While I sit comfortably on a sofa indoors with aircon, gaming on my iphone :p. Heee…..

Singapore National Museum
(Stamford Road)

We signed up for a museum tour about weddings old and new from 200 years ago, Victorian styles to our local weddings of different ethnic groups. So we got up early that day, arrived on time. But found out that we were the only ones who turned up……. Well, the organizers decides to go ahead even with just two of us. So while waiting…… Suddenly, a Caucasian lady dashed into the exhibit hall frantically and crumbled onto the ground, crying loudly! Elkan was shocked and hid behind me. I was taken aback too. But after a while I realised that it was an act! An interactive performance with the audience to help this lady plan her wedding. Haha… it was a brilliant idea.

And so, she relates to us, showing us her awful bright green wedding dress that was supposed to be white. And all preparations were not ready for her wedding which falls on the next day. So help came when another performer walked in and introduced himself as a wedding dress designer and we got involved in this wedding planning! Elkan managed to find some veils, gloves and picked his favorite dress design and put together a wedding dress for the lady. Learned interesting customs like breaking a glass to signify congratulating to a Jewish couple. He even helped wrote a wedding vow for the lady, completing a simple poems that rhymes. No prizes won. But was great fun.

Singapore Art Museum
(Bras Basah Road)

It’s a colorful event of the Night Festival. A series of light installations that stretches from The School of the Arts (SOTA) to the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), Singapore Management University (SMU) and the National Museum of Singapore.

There were enlarged children’s drawing of fairy tale characters lighted up outside SOTA. Musicians and dancers attracted lots of passerby to stop and enjoy their performance along the streets and in the big open space within the SMU compound. The projected images on the facade of the SAM and National Museum was fascinating! Old, new, nature, faces, animals, and architectural images were flashed onto the building. It was sightisfying!
