Grease is the Word

The gloomy super typhoon may be heading our way but the atmosphere inside the auditorium is hot, sunny and GREASY! Hits after hits, “Grease” – the longest-running musical in the history of Broadway, rocked the hall with all its mighty pop hits and groovy dance routines! Men in tights and ladies in curls! Hot bods and sexy girls! Don’t you love the candy times in the 50s?

Typhoon Megi – The Big Nasty Latecomer

(Photo Taken from NASA Satellite: At its current size and speed, Typhoon Megi (a Catfish name in Korean) is to-date the 15th and biggest typhoon of the year. It has already claimed at least 10 lives in the Philippines. A mother lost her grip of her young daughter in the rough sea after battling the typhoon for 3.5 hours. Right now, the weatherman is expecting it to land somewhere between Hong Kong and Macao this Friday. If it is a direct hit, this super typhoon may be north Asia Pacific’s largest typhoon since 1990.)

Daily Hatelines

I am beginning to hate journalism. Like millions around the globe, I started each new hopeful day reading some of the most “hateful headlines” of the world. Death, wars, terrorism, economy crisis, protests, bombings, rapes, nuclear talks, murders, suicides, accidents, destruction, disasters, phony politicians, strikes, joblessness, racism, lies and paid propaganda.

Editors today failed to highlight the positive sides of life. Instead, some of these cheap newspapers went so low to entertain ourselves with those senseless men-made politics. Leaders who we appointed by faith failed to deliver stability, peace and better lives for their people. Instead, big power nations’ leaders are hiding behind their own masses of people to rage hatred for all sorts of one-sided righteousness. Of course, editors snowball these hateful sentiment with their “truth-reporting”. “Hatelines” occupy 364 days of the year, leaving the last day of the year “wishing for a better new year”.

The aftermath of the recent “Diaoyu Island” disputes disgusted me. Overnight, we saw protests on both China and Japan. It was like seeing the same old draggy sitcom over and over again. We witnessed “childish acts from these 2 nations” disfiguring each other on the world stage. They justified their ugly acts as “patriotism”. Now, 2 superpower leaders’ unresolved issue has became a 200 million people’s issue. (Hate to point this up again – whenever you have America, oil and land in the same equation, you get endless draggy disputes.) Right now, I am expecting another plotless American season on that North Korea / Iran Nuclear Talk. Oh yes, the Thai Red Shirts season may be back soon – this time with more pyrotechnics – “fertiliser bombs!”

We have certainly evolved tremendously throughout the past 100 years. We are still very much in wars. With better killing-machine and better justification. Better looking leaders, better choices of words / cover-stories and definitely superb usage of media. For whatever reasons we believe in, we are still heading nowhere in the next 100 years to come.

Really, it is getting disgusting. World leaders, editors and parents – please change the world by creating less hatelines. Get rid of those fulcrum politics and let the right leaders walk the talk. At least, let me have a better reason to explain to my young boy why his first newspaper is full of crappy tales.

Happy 6th Batday!

Time flies, Elkan turns 6 today! My little prankster spent most of his childhood overseas with us. The last time he celebrated his birthday in Singapore was when he was one and two. He spent his next 4 birthdays in Hong Kong. Surprisingly, none in Shanghai. (Just realised we didn’t get him any cake on his 3rd birthday. It was a hush-hush 2-day trip in Hong Kong (with Kalinda) back in 2007.) Elkan’s childhood has been blessed with the finest! Despite being away from his loved ones in Singapore, he has many “uncles and aunties” pampering him in Hong Kong. Indeed, my boy had a marvelous childhood.

Elkan was very sad yesterday when he found out that Hongfei and family won’t be here for his birthday this year. Harshad and Tracy really love him. Since we banned all toys and games presents for Elkan, the duo organised a very special weekend activities for our little birthday boy. Felicia too, planned his “birthday suit” and “cake” weeks ago. Elkan was Indiana Jones last year and this year, he was crazy about superheroes (Iron-man, Ben10 and Batman). Mum decided to dress him up as a Dark Knight.

Last evening, Tracy organised an eerie night tour at the Haunted Ocean Park. Elkan-turned-BFatman roamed the Haunted Ocean Park with fear and tears! Later the night, we celebrated his birthday at our usual Karaoke Lounge till 3am! Thanks to Felicia and Tracy, Elkan had a very special “spark-tacular” cake! Zeph and Harshad played his favorite dance videos, he went wild and crazy! (Check out his topless act above!)

This afternoon, we headed out to Cirque du Soleil “Zaia” at Macao Venetian. The adults were more excited than the birthday boy. This is my second circus show. (I vaguely remember my first circus encounter!) Guess what? We were seated right at the first row and we were very very close to the stage and the performers. At the beginning of the show, Elkan was “body-searched” and “fed” popcorn by one of the lead characters! We love the 1.5 hour show, it is very very beautiful! (I have never seen anything like this before!) In my opinion, it was close to perfection! The music, the settings, the enchanting stage-play, the gravity-defying stunts and the colourful costumes – it is an incredible eye-opener experience for all of us! Simply Magical!!! (Thanks Harshad for the expensive memento Zaia presents!)

Thanks for spoiling my little prankster. This is his best birthday ever!

The Haunted Ocean Park

Last year, we visited the “Nightmare @ Disneyland”. This year, we decided to explore the “Haunted Ocean Park”. We heard many scary tales from the locals about this place. And they are right – Ocean Park is indeed more scary, darker and bloodier than the cute monster at Disneyland.

Our frightening experience started even before we arrive. The wandering ghosts of Ocean Park can be seen and heard at the bus terminal. They sprang out of the darkness and terrified the unprepared visitors. The torturous screams of the poor victims can be heard throughout the long night. Selina was the first victim in our group. An old woman, selling blood-soaking human eye-balls attacked her from nowhere!

The atmosphere at the Park was like a scene replicated out of Kelvin Tong’s horror movies. The park was illuminated red and green – certainly not the Christmas lighting. More evil characters lurked inside the park, waiting to launch another attack on more innocent minds – especially the young ones. Thick fog and dim lighting obstructed our senses. Elkan was the target of one evil witch. She haunted the poor boy round the park. Elkan was running in circles, screaming and crying. He even dropped his one of his shoes behind! In the end, Felicia had to risk her “soul” to get the shoe back from the monstrous witch. Many passersby simply watched the drama from a distant. No one intervenes to help.

The group spotted many evil beings and we captured the eerie moments on our camera. The haunted houses were too overcrowded with people. And some took as long as 2 hours to queue (This just reminded me of World Expo in Shanghai!). Even those with special passes had to queue for an hour before they can venture into the unknown. Sorry, there is no “special” express queue for pregnant, handicapped or elderly women. These people are not allowed in the first place.

The verdict? Ocean Park offers the raw Asian touch of fear (the evil spirits there speak Cantonese). It is darker, scarier and bloodier (and funnier!). However, it is too congested with people. Be prepared for the long queues, steep slopes and the hectic back-breaking walks. If you prefer the western English-speaking Halloween-themed park, Disneyland will be your best choice. Either way, you are heading for hell. Be warned and entertained.

Batman on the bus

The Dark Knight is back in Hong Kong! Not in his usual fancy Bat-Mobile (as the jam in Hong Kong is notorious and also 超人不會飛), BFatman Junior is taking the public bus this time! Together with him is a group of uncanny foreign “Action Heroes”! Meet the Red PussyCats, the Green Mosquito and the Black-Eyed Pee! They have blended in perfectly amongst the crowd. No one in the bus seems to give a damn on their unusual appearance. (though some rolled their eyes when Batman put on his costume.)

My Sunshine is Back! (With a heavy heart)

My little prankster came home today. Tracy and I are so glad that they are back! We sure miss his noise and mess. Elkan is the sunshine of our lives. On our way back home, he told us all the things he did in Singapore…how he lost to Qiqi in rock-climbing, how he tricked my mum with his pranks, his happiest moment at Downtown East and his chats with 2 strangers at the food court….

Just 30 minutes after I uploaded this blog… Felicia came out and told me that Elkan was crying softly in his bedroom. Earlier on, Elkan wanted me to get him his favorite Singapore breakfast “猪肠粉” for tomorrow’s breakfast. He misses his “poipoi” and all his loved ones back home. While we adults were outside in the living room, my little boy covered himself under the blanket, weeping silently for almost an hour. I went to take a peek at him, he was still sobbing and wiping his tears in the dim light. Felicia told me to give him some time alone. I have never seen him like this before and it breaks our hearts.  I am sure he left many broken hearts back home in Singapore. It is never easy to live apart. Especially for sentimental 6-year old soul like Elkan.
