The Storm and the Peace

(Photo Taken: Typhoon Nesat, Central Hong Kong – Today is Hong Kong’s 1st typhoon off day in 3 years. The wind was really strong last night. At 3am, I was awaken by the broken glass outside my balcony. It was quite a mess! Fortunately…No work for now! I woke up at 8am to clean up the mess. Later at 8:45am, armed with my camera, I dashed out of my apartment to roam the streets with Harshad! Central Hong Kong is unusually calm and quiet on a Thursday morning. For one rare moment, the streets in the CBD are empty. It is such a joy to walk on the streets without anyone blocking your way. Buying breakfast is such a breeze too! No queue at my favorite 茶餐廳! I took an hour walk from my home to Central Pier, snapping the rare empty walkways of Hong Kong. A strange contrast indeed…in this world of storm and peace.)

The 100th Apple Store (outside USA) – Opens 24th Sept in Hong Kong

(Photo taken yesterday and today: Revealing Apple’s 1st Flagship Store in Hong Kong, IFC – The big Apple Temptation is finally here – and just 10min-walk from my house! Opening 24th Sept, this will be Apple’s 100th store outside USA, its 6th store in China as Shanghai opens Apple’s 5th store on 23rd Sept. The 20,000 sqft HK store will be Asia’s cheapest venue for all Apple products due to the tax-free savings! Apple fans in Hong Kong are queuing outside the store right now! According to past traditions in Shanghai, Apple gives out special localised edition t-shirts and goodies to the first 5,000 customers on its opening day. Mmmm….Can’t resist the temptation of the Forbidden Fruit.)

Shanghai Madman is Back!

Warning: Mr Chay is extremely rough and violent with men. And super smooth and gentle with ladies + cars.

My 129th Visitor – Joey!!! (Updated)

It is no secret now…our favorite Golden Boy is now attached! To a very sweet, attractive and street-smart girl – Joey! She is certainly more chatty and interesting than my old bro! Both of them were in Hong Kong last weekend and I managed to spend some good time with them in Macau. Joey and Meijie were supposed to bungee off Macau Tower. Lucky Meijie, it was pouring that day. (3 months ago in Gold Coast, he managed to escape the roller-coaster ride.) Sigh…no drama for me to watch. Certainly, if Joey jumps, Meijie will jump too… Or maybe not. It will be good to catch his “you-know-what” expression on video!

GoodBuy, Giordano

(Photo Taken: Giordano Closing Down Sale at Causeway Bay – Yeah, they were gone even though they don’t wanna to say “Goodbuy”. At least, they kept their side of the bargain. 90% off!)

Peng Chau Island (坪洲)

Our last Hong Kong nature-hike happened 4 months ago – towards the end of spring.  Personally, I hate shopping outdoor in summer, let alone hiking up the hills. It is insane to hike under the scorching summer sun. Temperature is as high as 34-degree Celsius and the UV level is at its peak. Somehow, Harshad, Tracy and I were mad enough to attempt that today. We went to explore one of the last islands on our list – Peng Chau Island.

Traveling to Peng Chau Island is a breeze. We took the air-conditioned ferry at Central Pier 6. It was a short comfortable 20-min ride. Peng Chau Island is a very small island with only 5,000 inhabitants. It is located in-between Lantau Island and Hong Kong Island. Compared with the other Hong Kong’s outlying islands, Peng Chau is much cleaner and neater. It is not as overcrowded (or touristic) like Lamma or Cheung Chau islands. There are a lots of nice beach apartments along the coastal areas. A good balance between nature and concrete space. Overall, it seems like a very nice place to live.

We had a very short 4km-hike. The hot baking sun almost brought me down. Just 15 minutes out in the sun, I broke into cold sweat and felt dizzy. Mentally and physically, I just couldn’t catch up with their pace. Harshad and Tracy thought I was acting. Thanks to the shady forest (and a bottle of cold isotonic drink from Harshad), I slowed down my pace, warmed up my body and managed to recover my pace. We took about 90 minutes to complete the northern loop.

We do miss the presence of Felicia and Elkan. Hiking without them makes such a big difference. Elkan is always loud and naughty, commanding us around. I look forward to their return during the November-December holidays. By then, the weather will be cooler and we can resume our weekly nature-walks. And just enough time for me to train up my stamina.

Meet USS Ronald Reagan

Cosplayers save the show

The Hong Kong Ani-Comic & Game Fair organizers should thank these cosplayers for saving their show. Without them, the show stinks. Small and cheap-looking exhibition stands, poor space management and lacking of big international names, there was little to impress at the venue. Nothing new and spectacular, the only attraction worth watching was the hordes of cosplayers and the shutterbugs.

Browsing and shopping in the show was a nightmare. The exhibitors walled themselves in small pathetic stands and setup barricades to control footfall into their booths (one in one out concept). There were long queues everywhere – especially at those more popular stands. Walking passage was narrow and tight. Time after time, announcements of lost kids and parents were played over the air. It was more of “messy” than “exciting”.

No doubt, the cosplayers were the stars of the show. Some of those costumes looked very real (example: Iron-man, Transformer etc). Posing tirelessly for the shutterbugs, these colorful pretty characters froze the traffic to a standstill.

Shredded Pop Icons by Yoo Young-Wun

(Photo Taken: “The Power of Art” – Times Square Hong Kong – Made of shredded papers from scrapped magazines, textbooks, catalogs and flyers, these paper sculptures of pop icons are the uncanny works by Korean artist, Yoo Young-Wun.  The artist has a twisted humor in blending east and west icons in his works. From “Obama the Monkey God” to “George the Pope Monk“, the exhibition presented a colourful array of today’s pop identities and brands.)

My first Guinea Pigs

Back in Hong Kong – This evening, I invited Harshad and Tracy to be my first “Guinea Pigs” to try my “Ah Mah’s Mee” (vegetarian version). I thought I did well, it’s pretty yummy. So far, no complains from these 2 buddies. Let’s wait till tomorrow morning to see if there is any side-effects. p/s: Thanks Jaslyn for the box of Mee Swa.
