Gardens by the Bay

BLOG BY FELICIA (19th Nov 2011)

School holidays started with a blooming of orchids from all over the world! It was the 20th World Orchid Conference, held at the new “Gardens by the Bay” – Singapore’s premier urban iconic indoor attraction!

The Flower Dome is a huge indoor, air-conditioned park (spanning a total of 101 hectares)! Quite a pity it doesn’t have a big field for us to have a picnic. The Orchid Exhibition showcases many rare orchids from all over the world. There are black orchids that look like pitcher plants, orchids that smell like chocolate in the morning and orchids as big as my palms! My 2 mummies and aunt were shopping and bargaining for their favorite orchids. The kids were chatting with one of the stall owners and got themselves some free gifts!  It was a tiring day for all of us. Especially the long queues for the shutter-bus transport. At least the mummies and aunt went home happy. They each bought a pot of orchids!

WTH?!! IT’S MY WIFE!!!

(Photo Taken: Felicia’s Halloween Costume “Where’s Wenda”!! WTH = Wenda-Hell!!! I choked when I saw this photo on my WhatsApp! Didn’t know my wife has such a wicked sense of humor! Now, she is going to regret sending me this photo! Haaa… she is going to be the poster-girl for the week!)

ABOUT WENDA – Wenda is Waldo’s current girlfriend. The character is the “one who takes the pictures” according to the intro of The Wonder Book, but she always loses her camera. Wenda was featured in the Where’s Waldo? television series, in the episode The Living Exhibits. She first appeared in 1991 in Where’s Waldo: The Magnificent Poster Book along with her twin sister, Wilma. Wilma, however, has not been seen since. Wenda’s wardrobes include a red and white striped shirt, blue skirt, red and white striped stockings, glasses, and red and white bobbled hat.

Guangzhou Changlong Wildlife Zoo and International Circus

While my mum and aunties were busily shopping at Guangzhou city center, Tracy, Harshad, Mike and I made our way to the famous Changlong Wildlife Zoo and Changlong International Circus. Tracy got us a package deal. The HKD456 package includes a one-way 3-hour bus ride from Hong Kong to Changlong and tickets to both zoo and circus. Not bad for a short weekend getaway.

This is one zoo that allows visitors to be in close proximity with the animals. The name says “wildlife” but most of these so-called “wildlife animals” aren’t people or camera-shy. In fact, we suspected the animals are retired-circus performers.

My first impression was “this looks like our world’s best zoo” back in Singapore. A pretty decent copycat, I thought. It has both day and night zoo. Animals are sorted by their region origins (namely Africa, India, Australia etc). Big open enclosures, natural habitats, cleverly barricaded with natural obstacles (bushes, canals, valleys) to prevent the animals from escaping. The in-zoo breeding program seems successful. There are lots of tigers, pandas and koala bears here. We saw many tiger cubs at the nursery. What impressed me most was the close proximity between the visitors and the animals. Imagine we were just “5cm-glass-wall” away from the Siberian Tiger. Not sure if this is healthy for the animals.  The close proximity allows visitors to observe the animals closely but I am sure the prolonged noise and flashlights from the visitors will stress the animals badly.

On foot, the entire zoo-walk stretches about 3km. At the end of our walk, we hopped on a tram and it brought us into an open “Safari” where the savanna animals roam freely along the driveway. The zoo-keepers placed food by the driveway so the animals were drawn close to the tram. The more dangerous predators (lions, cheetahs, brown bears, hippopotamus, rhinoceros) were kept behind barriers.

Later in the evening, my mum and aunties joined us at the Changlong International Circus. It is mentioned on many travel websites that the Changlong International Circus outclassed Macau’s Cirque du Soleil’s ZAIA. Yes, the reviews are right! The 90-min show is a mixture of ZAIA, The House of Dancing Water and the typical animal circus. The acts took place on and off stage and over the audience. There were some elements of surprises. It was very entertaining, fun and spectacular. Certainly more lively and exciting than ZAIA.

Based on the package price (transport, zoo and circus), it is definitely worth a visit! I would love to stay over at the Changlong Hotel! It is amazing to see white tigers running freely by the hotel lounge. A brilliant hotel concept of blending wildlife and people!

Mum’s Birthday Trip – Eat, Play, Laugh!

It is an unusual weekend for me. 3 days, 3 cities with 3 hyper-active aunties ladies. It is quite an awesome short holiday. Thanks to my lucky Auntie Amyshe won a pair of  air tickets to Hong Kong and invited both my mum and her friend “Auntie Diana” (my 130th HK Visitor) over this weekend. Auntie Amy and mum have been to Hong Kong many times and they wanted to experience something different. So I suggested a quick-tour to Shenzhen and Guangzhou. It was also my mum’s 63rd Birthday. Mum got herself a giant “ice-kacang cake”. It has been over 5 years since I celebrated her birthday with her. Boy, I was so happy to be able to spend her actual birthday with her in China.

It was a short but very enjoyable (and tiring) trip. As usual, Auntie Amy greeted me with the same old irritating punchline “You are getting fat again!” Empress Mum commanded and bossed me around. I was her exclusive porter for 3 days. But it was all fun! These ladies can really walk, shop and eat! From 7am to 2am, they were super high on energy! Can’t believe I was the quietest one in this trip.

This is one trip when I discovered new things about my old folks. Auntie Amy and mum were exceptionally mischievous and full of pranks. No wonder I see the similarities in Elkan. Mischief is always in the blood. (And it skipped a generation – no lah, I didn’t get their genes). Mum was making comical moves and faces in all photo shoots. And Auntie Amy was full of surprises and actions! Out of the blue, she stood on a giant swing and swung standing! And not to mention those hilarious candid “R-rated” jokes they cracked throughout the trip! Simply incredible! Really these aren’t ordinary “aunties”. It is so cool to have such modern, adventurous and spontaneous folks.

Time flies quickly, the ladies flew back to Singapore 3 hours ago. Bet they enjoyed this trip a lot. Sigh, wish they can stay a day or two longer. They made such great travel companions and I am looking forward to travel with them soon! I start missing them already… (Thanks Harshad, Tracy and Cousin for joining us in China too! For sure, the more, the older, the merrier!)

Lucky Boy 7

This is a very special birthday for Elkan. This is his first birthday celebration in Singapore since 2006. My boy was only 3 when he traveled with me from 2007-2010. It is good to have his grandparents, cousins and friends at home celebrating his Lucky 7.  Bet it was the first time Qiqi celebrated Elkan’s birthday too. And many thanks to all my Singapore buddies and families (Lionnel, Joey, Kalinda, Karen, Duuk, Juliana, Jovel, James, Auntie Amy, Hong Fei and Sherry) who took time off  (and many sacrifices) to attend his party. From his tone that night, he had a great birthday! Wish I was there too.

BLOG BY FELICIA (17th Oct 2011)

2 weeks ago, I asked Elkan what he would like to do on his birthday. He said he wanted a karaoke singing session like he had last year. But without his Hong Kong Buddies (Uncle Harshad and Auntie Bay Bay), there’s less crazy fun. Considering the number of kids who came, as young as 4 1/2 months to 7 years old, it should be a more “child-friendly event”. So we had BBQ at Costa Sands Chalet instead!

It was another steaming hot party after our last Eunos gathering. The aircon wasn’t cool enough and there were more than 6-7 BBQ pits near us. That’s quite a lot of heat all burning at the same time! Thanks to my family-in-law, they helped me to cook all the food. We were very well-fed! Burrp….. Cake cutting was quite a challenge! Fortunately, we have strong uncles to help cut up the frozen ice cream cake. Uncle Lionnel tried to saw the cake with a small knife while Uncle Duuk chop chop with a chopper!!

With kids running, screaming and crying, it kept the parents really busy. We’ll need extra help in the future gatherings. Parents were quite exhausted chasing kids around. Uncle Gareth, must bring your rotan lah. Thank you all our guests who came to join us on Sunday evening despite their tight study and work schedules. And thank you for all the nice presents too! Elkan’s wish list fulfilled! What a lucky-seven year old boy!

A Sonny Goodbye

This visit, Elkan surprised me with his level of maturity and sensibility.
There are 2 sides of Elkan – He always got himself in some stupid mischief (like pouring sand on my face when I am suntanning or damaging things around him). On the other hand, Elkan displayed an amazing level of sensibility and love for his loved ones. Acting like our little protector, he is always looking out for his mum and dad. If I walked a little too fast in front of Felicia, Elkan will pull me back and ask me to wait for her. And whenever he can’t find me, he will be worried if I have left him (for Hong Kong) without saying farewell. Elkan keeps an “internal timer” in his mind – always reminding himself of my remaining hours or days in Singapore before I fly off again. When I was in his age (7-year-old), I have never cherish family ties to such depth. From Elkan, I have learn to spend more time with my own dad and mum too.

Last night, Elkan accompanied me till 1am. And he woke up “fresh and ready” at 5am this morning to see me off.  His usual sleeping hours are from 10pm to 8am. I told him it will be too tiring for him to wake up so early as he has a long day ahead (at school). He said “it is okay lah, I am not tired. You are my dad. I must send you off to the airport. Also later, mummy will be alone after you left. I can accompany her back mah”.

After the happy send-off at the gate, Felicia wept briefly at the train station. Elkan saw her sadness and comforted her in his comical tone “Ai yah, why sad sad? Okay lah, I sayang you okay. Tonight, I will tuck you to bed and give you a hug. Okay?” Aww… he is like a mini Joe …. He is, undoubtedly, our emotional support pillar, our little sunshine. A purity that comes from within. Elkan is always there for both of us at the right time, at the right place. And I thank God for blessing me with such a wonderful child.

My Water Boy

Colors of Bintan (Updated)

This week, it is school holidays and I promised my boy another adventure.
He likes the trees, the beach and the sea. Felicia and I decided to bring him to back to his favorite island – Bintan. We were thinking of Tioman Island but the 2-hour coach ride doesn’t sound appealing to us. Moreover, I have never been to Bintan. I have heard so many “erotic escapades” and “romantic tales” of this island. During my dating days, Bintan was a very popular getaway for young unmarried couples. Some of my friends have stayed at the famous Banyan Tree Resorts where lovers literally go Full Monty in their own 100% private villa-pools, watching the sunset. Sounds like “Temptation Island”.

For this particular trip, we won’t be heading to Banyan Tree Resorts.
Specially for Elkan, we are going to have some exciting island life! My son wants to attempt new stuffs – sleeping over in a “kampong hut”, snorkeling, kayaking, surf-boarding, motor-scooter and air-rifle. He successfully attempted all of the activities but he freaked out most of it. We had so much fun watching him attempting those activities. Elkan was both curious and timid. Like a little kitten, he bounced in and out of action. He was one of the first few who jumped into the deep ocean and the first one who wanted out. He was the first who climbed into the kayak and the first one who fell off. He was the first one who suggested air-rifle and didn’t dare to come close to the thundering firing range. It took Elkan a while to feel safe before he tried these new activities. He enjoys risks and he wants to feel absolutely safe too. He is the perfect combination of “Kiasuism” (怕输) and “Kiasism” (怕死).

Time flies really fast on the island. There are so many things to do here – at different time, at different places. We spent 4 great days in Bintan (except for some disruptive work moments). Here are our favorite top “4 Colorful Moments”:

1) BLUE – THE POOL, THE SEA & THE FISHES

Here, Elkan achieved 3 of his “firsts” – Kayaking, Snorkeling and Backstroke Swimming! Took him a lot of guts and efforts to master them.

2) GREEN – THE TREES, THE ROCKS, THE ANIMALS, THE E-SCOOTER

We roamed the island on an e-Scooter, avoided a giant bee hive in the forest hike, conquered boulder rocks at the coast and fed deers at a mini zoo.

3) BROWN – LITTLE HUTS, SHOPPING, MASSAGE, DINNERS

Just 10-drive away – food, souvenirs and massage services are 30%-50% cheaper than the ones offered in the resort. We can’t afford the expensive (and lousy) food in the resort. We came out to this small town market huts for dinner and really nice Indonesian oil massage (SGD45 for 90 minutes).

4) ORANGE – SUNSET, KELONG

Beautiful sunset and a cool breezy place to dine, here you find a floating bar and restaurant (Kelong Style) on the sea. Stunning!

The Taste of Family II – Deep Fried Paper-Wrapped Chicken (纸包鸡)

After my last successful “cooking lesson” with my mum, I am back in Singapore this weekend to learn another favorite dish from her. This is one popular Malaysian Chinese dish which she has not cooked for me since my teenage. It has been one of my most favorite dishes, the “Paper-Wrapped Chicken” (纸包鸡).

The secret lies in the paper packs (self-made using baking paper) that conceal the full essence of the marinating flavors. Depending what taste you like, you may marinate the chicken with oyster sauce, black-pepper sauce, honey or even five-spices powder. The recipe is simple – Marinate, pack and deep fry the chicken. Emerged in the oil hot, the bag evenly cooked the chicken, concealing the rich taste inside. The outcome: Rich savory taste, juicy and tender chicken! Yummy!

“My Malaysia and Singapore Family in Bintan” – Blog by Elkan and Felicia

BLOG BY ELKAN CHUA (9th Aug 2011)

Last Saturday, my family took a ferry to Bintan in Indonesia. When we are there, we took an orange bus to the lobby to check in. While we are waiting, Qiqi and me were playing hide and seek. After checking in, a small little buggy that can fit five people, took us to our bungalow. My family stay in two different bungalows. It started to rain. My mummy blew a beach ball. We played the ball until dinner. Amy yi poh and Ah mah cooked dinner for the whole family. We had purple sweet potato porridge. There were scramble eggs, sardine, luncheon meat, veggies and chicken.

After the dinner, I bathed and slept on the floor in a sleeping bag. I felt scared sleeping on the floor because I was worried there was cockroaches under the bed. So my mother let me sleep on the bed with poh poh.

The next day, after breakfast, we went to the beach. I went deep into the sea. We found seashells, and dig small pools. After that, we went to the swimming pool. It was windy. Our beach ball flew into the pool and my mum tried to swim after it. But the ball flew away from the pool and went onto the ground. And I saved the ball’s life when I held it in my hands. We went home to bathe.

We took a grey bus to Pasar Ole to eat lunch and shop around. Gugu bought ice cream for us. After that, a man helped us to do a tattoo on our legs. Qiqi had a Minnie Mouse, my mum had a butterfly, Gugu had a spiky fish and I had a rocket on my leg! We went back to our bungalow after that. We went to the club house to make masks and find more seashells at the beach. Amy yi poh, my mother, Qiqi and me went to buy some bread and a cake for my great grand mother. And we saw eight Iguanas in a big glass cage. We went back and had BBQ for dinner. We eat the chicken wing but it was not all cooked. There was hotdogs, grapes, noodle, veggies, pork chop and jelly. The noodle was the most tasty.

The next morning, we went to the beach again. We walked to the forest side of the beach. And I saw a lot of dirty leaves from the sea. Then we walked back and jumped over some small rivers. We changed our tee shirts and ate lunch. Gugu bring us to a nice place. The driver drove us on a car with very big tyres and we splashed into the mud. It was exciting.

After that we walked back to our bungalow and checked out. We took the ferry back to Singapore and took a cab back to Tampines!

The End.

BLOG BY FELICIA TAM (9th Aug 2011)

It was a big gathering of families from Singapore and Muar. We have four generations from great grand granny to great grandson!

A one-hour ferry from Tenah Merah ferry terminal took us to Bintan Resorts. It was a smooth ride, unlike those ferry trips from HK to Macau or Zhuhai where Elkan pukes over Joe. We were greeted with sunny hot weather and lots of landscaped greenery. There were a few different resorts in Bintan. The Nirvana Suria bungalows we checked in were 2-stories with 3 spacious bedrooms on the second floor. And big fully equipped kitchen and living hall.In front of our bungalows was a big pond with water lilies and occasional sightings of a meter-long monitor lizards and small squirrels. Lots of beautiful flowers too.

Unfortunately, it started to rain in the afternoon. So we stayed indoors while the kids were kicking a beach ball around and mummies and grannies are scolding them for making a din while baby Jorance was trying to get an afternoon nap. The rain continued. Our mums and aunts decided to cook dinner instead of dining out. We found out that dining in Bintan was really expensive and all expenses are in Singapore dollars instead of Rupiah! This was not the usual travel light and easy trip. We loaded our luggage with lots of food! Our first dinner was simple dishes but was quite a spread! We had sweet potato porridge, canned vegetarian mushrooms, fried veggies, luncheon, stir fried chicken, sardines, steamed otah, fried eggs and fruits!

After dinner was chatting and watching TV while the kids were running up and down the staircase and playing hide and seek in the big bungalow. It doesn’t take long before they were hungry and asking for supper. Qiqi and Elkan shared 3 packets of instant noodles before they were satisfied and head for bed.

The next day, the kids were up early. As Bintan is an hour behind Singapore, and sunrise is much earlier, by 7am Singapore time, it was hot and sunny! The kids were bugging us to take them to the beach, so after a quick breakfast with sardine and bread toast, we headed out. The fine white sand was great! The shallow water stretched for quite a far distance into the sea. It was safe for the kids to roam around in the knee-high waters. Baby Jorance was enjoying every bit of it too. After less than 30 min, the scotching sun made us head for the cooler swimming pool instead. The pool was nicely shaped and sectioned for kids and adults under the shady coconut tress. We had so much fun with the underwater camera!

Lunch was great at Pasar Ole which was about 10-min coach ride to a small town. It was more like a tourist town for the guests of Bintan Resorts. A few restaurants and souvenir shops. I decided to do a little tattoo as I always wanted to but was worried about the needle and pain. But glad that this was a temporary one that last for only 2 weeks! It is similar to Henna but the colour looked like a real tattoo. Jovel, Qiqi and Elkan all picked a design and did a quick 5-min tattoo.

Jovel and me decided to send the two kids to the resort’s club house for a two-hour program where they are taken care of by the friendly staff to make face masks and pick seashells at the beach with other children. Back at the bungalow, our aunts called in masseurs for a one-hour pampering massage. While the uncles and dads laze at the balcony with peanuts and beers and updating stock market results from their laptops! And a nice view of bikini babes at the opposite bungalows from our balcony! I mean baby girls in bikinis lah….

Finally, we had our BBQ dinner! That emptied a few luggage! We brought our own chicken wings, pork chop, hotdogs, otah, sweet corns, sweet potatoes, seasoning, cup noodles, rice, papaya, bananas, dragon fruits, pineapple, lime juice, lots of biscuits, snacks, chocolates, teas, coffees, milos, disposable utensils and BBQ sauce. Amy Ah Yi brought 24 bottles of mineral water! We bought some eggs from the resort’s mini mart which cost 50 cents each! Some veggies were bought in the afternoon from Pasar Ole. Phew! That’s a lot of food! And it was a happy meal! Blurp….

Breakfast was great with Amy ah yi’s French toasts and scramble eggs. It was also a surprise breakfast for Ah Poh. We had a birthday cake for her. We wished her great health and lots of happiness. Really appreciate her traveling all the way from Muar to join us on this trip. It was rather tough for her especially during the long queues at the customs and ferry boarding. But she was all smiles through out with great spirit! Bravo Ah Poh!! All of us sang Happy Birthday in English and Chinese! Even baby Jorance was clapping his hands and enjoying it.

I took the kids to the beach again for dig more holes and find more seashells. The morning sun warmed on our face as we took a long scroll to the other end of the beach which was more rocky and forested. We went back after an hour. Jovel took the kids out on the second adventure! The big monster 4-wheel drive! While Jovel drove one of the cars with Qiqi, Elkan had an experienced driver to drive him. In the beginning, Elkan was screaming and commanding his driver to slow down so that he doesn’t vomit. But soon, he was asking for more speed and bums! They were heading into mud splashes! After a short 10-15 min ride, they were thrilled and their faces tanned! Lucky driver escaped Elkan’s puke!

Finally, we had to pack up and check out. We explored around the lobby and backyard, took more photographs before heading to the ferry terminal. Another smooth ride back and too soon we had to say goodbyes. Elkan asked if he could go back there again on the way back. He likes the beach and the sand! It was indeed a great trip. Most importantly, everyone enjoyed it. Would be great if the other boys, Leon, Chester and Joe were here. There would be mad fun! Looking forward to the next family gathering!
