The Mega Designer Reunion – Since 1996

(My ex-Temasek Poly Design Course Mates – since 1997!)

I was browsing Joanne’s Picassa this morning and I saw the photos of the Mega VC Gathering. "VC" stands for Visual Communication – a course where I met many of my buddies. It is so heart-warming browsing these photos online. I love what Joanne wrote in her captions.

Can see a couple familiar faces – people who I always want to meet and say "hi" – There are Zen, Bread, Joey, Dominic (my BMT friend), Sabrina, Vivian, Kailing and Sherry. Of course, the usual gang – Ernest, Randy, Boy, Christina, Diane and Martin! (My lovely boy from Tokyo!)

I was so moved by the smiles and joys in all these snapshots. It was such a great and meaningful reunion!
I should take that extra effort (plus the cost) to come back for this reunion. At least I can fill in more SPACE for Class VC1A. (where is the others like Fartly, Ash, Lynette, Dione, Juliana etc?)

Thanks Joanne for uploading these photos on your Picassa. Thanks Randy for calling me to invite me too! And Diane for emailing me reminders on this event too! Any chance I get to have the MSN contacts of those I marked orange here?

FHM – “Fool Him” Magazine

Every month, I would have friends visiting me from HK or Singapore. And each time, I will get them to bring me a couple of magazines. Now, it seems I have a big ISSUE with FHM. Yes, a big unhappy issue.

You see, big magazine brands like FHM, Stuff IT or Maxim have their own country-editions. It means, they share a common pool of content. If you are reading FHM UK and FHM Singapore, you will find similar content. The main difference is of course the covergirl they put on the front cover. The UK version will sports more uncensored content (such as nude photos) which Singapore’s version cannot.

So, what is the BIG issue? Well, both country-edition (FHM Singapore and UK) run a monthly "Photo Contest" – The Singapore Edition says "Snap Anything Outrageous? Send it in and win prizes? Email: incoming@fhm.com.sg" For the UK edition, the contestants will have to send their entries to a number instead. And every month, both magazines will allocate 1 page showing the entries. Of course, there are some pretty cool snaps and yes, there is always a WINNER for each country!

So, this is a REAL contest with REAL prizes huh? I would deem it is a localise one too (based on the submission email address). Well, take a look for yourself.

(Left: FHM UK: Peter from Liverpool, FHM Singapore: Peter from Katong) – Same Peter?

(Left: FHM UK: Quesy, FHM Singapore: Lin, Tanjong Pagar) Different Photographer?

(Left: FHM UK: Sam Bassett from Hadleigh, FHM Singapore: Sam Lee) – Different Sam?

(Left: FHM UK: Bun, Ely, FHM Singapore: Paul from Dover Road) – Different Address?

Okay, I say it is okay to share a pool of content. But entries? That is disgusting! That is low class!

And we are talking about being original here. I can’t believe FHM (a big international magazine) would be so less creative and careless about their content. Come on, dun you know we have both FHM UK and FHM Singapore selling in the same shop? You cannot get away with such low-class "cheats" by changing photographer’s name and address! That is stupid. And plain lazy!

Last of all, you are creating a real "contest" for your readers to take part with the promise of a REAL prize. And you used the same photos, changed the particulars and rewarded the same prize to the same batch of people! Now, which are the real entries? The Singapore Version or UK? I thought such act is illegal and against any code of conduct.

I will send this blog to FHM and MICA Singapore. I want my refunds! I want to hear their reasons.
And perhaps, my entry to FHM will be their "SNAP of the Month"!

Watching Transformer with Yao Ming

I went to watch the movie "Transformer" this afternoon and guess who I saw?!
Yao Ming! Wow..it’s so good to meet him in person. (Just hope he is not sitting
right in front of me later..)

Bookmarks of our Life

Have you ever hear an old song which stirs up the memories inside you? It is like traveling through time. You can almost taste the past, feel the atmosphere back then. A strange but familiar feeling, songs do have its magic. It can bookmark the phases of your life.

Perhaps I "burnt" my memories and feelings better in mp3 format – not in jpeg or mov. I can revisit a certain place I have once visited but the sight of the place doesn’t really trigger the "taste of yesterday". It is just "buildings" to me – physical and nothing emotional about. Songs are different – I can even recall my mood back then. Am I happy, sad or nervous?

Whenever I hear an old familiar song, it let me travel back to the spot where I "burnt" those memories and feelings. Like a bookmark of my life, I refresh that part of the memories – I can almost even taste the scent of yesterday’s atmosphere. Is it sweet, sunny, ocean, humid, rainy or cold?

Whenever I hear these songs, images of my past came alive to me. Like bookmark of my life, I could feel and see images right in front of my eyes. Seeing faces, smiles and hearing voices of that moment in time.

Goodbye Again.

Finally, after 4 weeks in Shanghai, Elkan and Feli left for Singapore once more (2nd time this year). It wasn’t as bad as the last one. At least this time, little Elkan has 2 uncles to play with. Yogi and Desmond coincidently were in town this week and 4 of them happened to be on the same flight back. Elkan didn’t even shed a tear this time. His parting words were "Daddy, go shopping ah, Elkan go. I love you. See you. Bye". With that, he paced in with the ice cream cup I bought for him.

(Yo Desmond, thanks for baby-sitting that litte terror on board. Haaaa…Good Luck!)  ~ The house is so quiet and empty once more.

Concrete Jungle

It is Felicia and Elkan’s last weekend in Shanghai (in less than 24 hours, they will be flying back to Singapore!). Wanted to do something really new today. Francis suggested bringing us to the beach. (Yes, the beach club at Shanghai!) But the heat wave may be too harsh on Little Elkan. We decided to check out the popular Shanghai Science Centre. (Lucky we all didn’t go to the beach cos’ it was raining pretty bad in the afternoon).

The Shanghai Science Centre is REALLY HUGE! Not only it is huge, they built a real tropical forest right inside the building! I was totally amazed by the way they showcases their stuffs. It was modern, interactive and very well-thought. We climbed and explored this indoor tropical forest. We saw people playing archery against a robot which never miss the bull-eye. And we visited many experiential zones of insects, fishes and dinosaurs. There was even a spherical dome where you get to watch a 4D-movie!

It is indeed a great place for kids and families. Even the adults are excited about it!

Found the New “Xiang Yang” Market

Found this on our way to the Shanghai Science Centre – the rumour of a new Xiang Yang Market is true! Fully aircon, (a little too clean and orderly), full of "fight-the-piracy-and-support-the-fakes" Ang Mohs and located just right beside the subway station! Haaa… this is where the fakes went – they went UNDERGROUND! Haaa…what a lucky day (07.07.07) for shoppers like me!

The Big Hangzhou Gathering

It was quite a big and unique tour group. 2 Shanghainese, 7 Singaporeans and 2 Hongkies. We had a hot and sweaty time at beautiful Hangzhou last weekend (30 Jun – 1st July). And my little monster is REALLY a BIG TERROR. (He terrorised all the uncles and aunties on this trip). Imagine carrying a sandbag (weigh 14kg), walking under the hot summer sun – 38 degree all day long! It is an interesting and back-breaking trip for me.

We crossed suspending trip at Dragon Well Hill, watched sunset at West Lake, spat at General Yue’s temple, last-minute bikinis and trunks shopping (for night swimming), eating famous rice dumplings at Jia Xing, shopping at Hangzhou’s fashion wholesale center and riding sedan the Chinese Way.
