The Clown Festival

The weather is getting cooler (18-22 degree). Kalinda is so happy cos’ she gets to wear her sexy autumn clothings now. It is sunny and cooling. A perfect weather for some outdoor activity. So, last Sat, we decided to go picnic at the Shanghai Century Park.

It is the Clown Festival at the Shanghai Century Park. You can’t believe the number of clowns we saw that day. (Of couse, we exclude our own clowns – Tracy and Elkan). We rode a 4-man cart, cruised around the park in a 7km/hour motorboat, roller-bladed around the 3km park and picnic under the cool blue sky.

Elkan’s 3rd Birthday

When I got an oversea assignment on 17th Oct, my heart sank a little
– cos 17th Oct is Elkan’s birthday. I was looking forward to spend this special day with him but no one in my team can stand in for me for this trip. Thus, it seems that I have to miss Elkan’s birthday <again> this year. (I missed his 2nd birthday). Urghh…the feeling wasn’t that good. I mean, look, he is here in Shanghai with me now yet I have to go elsewhere on his special day. I was feeling a little disappointed with my decision to travel. (I feel so bad not being with my boy on his actual day!)

Sensing my disappointment, my wife and Kalinda planned a short trip to be with me…so that Elkan can be with his daddy on his special day. Knowing I have to transit my (Vietnam) flight at Hong Kong, they joined me in Hong Kong for a short encounter (just to spend 17th Oct with me). I am feeling so blessed and happy! Though it was such a short span of time, I was so happy to have their companionship. Most importantly, Elkan spent his birthday with his old daddy and mummy (with his favourite Auntie Kal) at Hong Kong!

I brought them to the Peak and we had dinner there. During dinner, we asked Elkan about his “birthday”… He sat there, shaking his head, telling us that he doesn’t remember his birthday and there is no cake to blow. When we told him that it was his birthday today, he just sat there, giving us his silly smile. I guessed he didn’t believe any one of us. He just enjoyed flying around… thinking Hong Kong is Singapore. At barely 3, I don’t think Elkan is going to remember much on all these. Haaa… he just enjoy running around. (We made our 1st Crystal Impressions. See Below)

Next morning at 5am, I woke up and packed my bags. It was an early flight. Elkan, my wife and Kalinda were still sleeping.  Looking at them, I am so happy… I am such a lucky and blessed man, I thought. Despite the tight timing, I still managed to spend some time with my little boy on his actual birthday. It was a little disruptive for all of us… but most importantly, I was there on his actual day. It was a short stay for them but I am sure they are happy too.

Leaving no regrets, I can fully concentrate on my work now. I know someone is taking care of my little monster.

“See you guys back in Shanghai on Friday”, I whispered.Closing the door, I made my way to Vietnam.

p/s (Thanks Auntie Amy for your greetings. Thanks Meijie, Kalinda, Joanne, Juliana & Tracy for his 2nd Cars! He loves it! Except he kept asking “again???”..)

My 2nd Year of Blogs

Lately, I have been receiving a couple of emails and msn from my “loyal readers”. Many thought I have given up this SPACE and moved over to FACEBOOK. Yes, it is really quite addictive on FACEBOOK. I have been spending my nights recruiting vampires and fighting zombies so I can retain my spot at the top 3. Haaa…ok, that is not really my main reason for not blogging.

Yes, there have been so much activities going on in my life right now. And I regreted not recording them on my blog. Perhaps, I should stick to my “1 blog-per-week” rountine. At least, people at home can find out the latest gossips. And people outside the clan can ponder what’s going on with this strange animal.

Here am I, sitting on my couch, enjoying the cool 15 degree night. I have Kalinda day-dreaming in front of me, Felicia making “Tang-Yuan” in the kitchen and Tracy reading “Lao Fu Zhi” to Elkan beside me. (I thought I asked Tracy to read bedtime stories to Elkan…I doubt Lao Fu Zhi is one!!! Man, she is a joker! No wonder, Elkan is NOT SLEEPING now – it is 1130pm now!)

Ahh…. life is so blissful right now. Wife, son and girlfriends – all under 1 roof. It is no wonder someone msn me “I really respect you, Joe… how you do it?” (Yeah, I told Randy that I am going to build the next “Playboy Mansion” in Asia and he was like “er…” last night)

Just came back from Vietnam and HK, celebrated my son’s birthday and suffering a terribly messy house right now. Need bigger space, more girlfriends and maybe a 2nd monster. Life is so unpredictable yet it is something we plan ahead. But we can never know our next junction of life – the who, where and what.

Yes, life has changed so much for me and my friends – since my very 1st blog back in 2005.

1) Francis Chay bought his mansion now. Less the playmates.
2) MC has married and is now a father!
3) Gareth has a car, 2 sons and 3 handphones?
4) Kalinda is becoming an attractive young and rich single.
5) Joanne is running a good and meaningful studio – with her another successful and crazy “Ang”
6) Juliana and Duuk bought and renovated their half-a-million HDB at central AMK
7) Jimmy married, got a brand new house and a successful business. Time for a little Jim.
8) Yifu ~ Ah… the friend I miss most – got to catch up with him on his naughty mischiefs
9) Yixi ~ My loyal reader and a role model for me.
10) Meijie ~ Man…how many girlfriends you had now? I lost count.
11) Tracy ~ Gained a couple fo KGs and moving on to an expat’s Account life.

Come 23rd Oct 2007, my blog celebrates its 2nd birthday.
Last year, I wrote 94 blogs and received 16600 visitorships.
This year, I wrote 97 blogs and received 24385 visitorships.
Here is the list of my 2nd Year Blog. Some are sad, heart-warming and amusing. I have bold those that I love so much.
Click on them and it leads you right to my archive.
Hope you have an enjoyable time with me. Looking forward to another great year.

My Last Bachelor’s Golden Week

This golden week changed the equation of my life.

This is my 1st Golden Week in Shanghai. I spent all my previous "golden weeks" back in Singapore. And it is the week that changed the equation on my life. Pre-1st Oct and Post-1st Oct is such a big contrast. To me, it plays a huge difference to my lifestyle.

You see, my sweetie Bobo and little prankster (aka "Elkan") are finally back again (permanently). Someone suggested that I throw a Bachelor Night the night before. Yah, I couldn’t agree more. Afterall, I have been living a "Bachelor’s Life" for the past 18 months of my life. To many, I am such a lucky bastard. I have a very supportive and never-jealous wife, plus a couple of lovely and beautiful girlfriends who care and "sayang" me a lot. And I have a "ang-moh-looking" kid who is so adorable and cheeky. It feels good to the bystanders. Try living my life, it is not as rosy as people see.

Now, I am under the command of 3 women plus 1 baby. I have no room to roam in my tiny house. I can no longer play my Xbox 360 games in peace…or watch my sexy videos in private. Now, I have to watch my behaviour, habits and tone of voice (so that I do not corrupt this monster). My wife and girlfriends are nagging at me all the time. "JOE! Dun behave like this! You see, Elkan is picking up this act! Ai yoooo….Can you behave like a father!"

Father – what is that? I looked at my little boy and asked him. "Elkan, are you sure I am your father?" He said in an absolution "YES!" Suddenly, I remember I am a father. Shit, I have to behave like one. No more swearing of "Fs" and "Ss"…I got to watch my tongue now. I don’t feel like one… In fact, I thought Elkan is my brother!

Not only the nags I got from the women. I got slaps and punches and disapproval stares from them! Life is going to be so tough for me. My wife wanted me to get rid of my snoring. My girlfriends banned me from eating pork and beef. My son wanted me to do sports with him. What happen to my golden life before this week?

Having said all these…Yes, I do have my share of fun and blissfulness.
Life is good with great friends and family. We packed the 7-day break with so many fun activities. And I say, yes, it has been smooth and enjoyable. Just a little too fast for me to savour the taste and recap the loveliest "moments". I got less freedom but a better life.

And I want to share this with my folks back home. Not the fun part. I am talking about sharing my loads of naggings and weight-losing pains. (It is always good in the company of fun ladies!)

Ache-boarding (not snowboarding)

I tried snowboarding today in Shanghai. Man, it was the "Ride of my Life".

I should have try this during the golden holidays in October (or at least come physically prepared). After 1 session of this, I certainly need 3-4 days to recover. Right now, I am lying on my bed – having all sorts of "never-experience-before" achings in my life. Honestly, I dun even know which part of my body is aching now. It seems like every part…including my balls! Eeeeeeeeouch.

It is one of those things that I should have never underestimated.. It is one of those things that looks so stupidly simple but terribly not. To me, it was more of body-breaking+aching than anything else. (Yes, it is a sign to remind me to do my regular exercise. My body just cannot handle those bumps and knocks). I fell at least 15 times today!

Despite all these sufferings, we endured and snowboard for 3 hours. Good thing they built an escalator to bring us up to the top of the slope (so we don’t have to walk). Leilie and Tracy were such great sports. They kept my spirit high, kept encouraging me. I think they know I cannot tahan another fall anymore. It is not just the pain…. It was also about getting up. Man, it was really difficult getting up on your 2 feet on that slippery terrain. Seriously, it is not easy for a 1st-timer.

Haaa.. will I be back? Yes, cos’ it is so cool to snowboard. But it is just not cool not able to stand up after a fall. (Once I fell, it’s as good that I am "game-over". You see me sitting there still on the slope.)

The girls suggested I start doing some sit-ups now (before our next visit). Yes, I certainly need stomach muscles.

Right…I just want to sleep still. Must sleep like a log cos’ any turn will be painful.

(p/s: With all these pain, I am going to board a plane to Hong Kong in 6-hour time… Hope it isn’t bumpy ride.)

Our 7th Wonder – Kaylene!

Our "Manchunie" couple, MC and Erny (finally, I got her name right) welcome their 1st cute and healthy daughter, Kaylene on Thursday 20th Sept. It comes as a very very blissful news! I almost ask Juliana "Huh, since when?" I remember writing about Erny expecting a baby back in Feb this year. Wow, time really flies…and my memory of "Wahbiang" still stuck back in 2006 May (the day I left).

MC, congrats! Haven’t got the chance to congrats you! Fatherhood is going to be really fun for you. I am so happy for you. I just can’t imagine you are already a father! Life is going to be really exciting throughout the next 12 months. Cherish those moments. And yeah, send me the link to your photo-album! Okay?

The clan is really growing… our 7th wonder! Yeah…finally a young girl for our baby boys to court. (Claudia, Elkan, Xavier, Jacob, Grey, Isaac and now Kaylene!) The 2nd girl in our clan and what a Lucky 7, I bet.

Smoking and Non-Smoking Areas

(Picture: 2 smoking signs at Yiwu) – The fine thin line between smoking and non-smoking. The pillar marks the spot.

Yiwu – World’s Wholesale Capital

Since 2003, I have been hearing about this place called "Yiwu" from my business friends in Singapore. And Scott and I even got some cool stocks from this place back in 2005. I was told this is the world’s wholesale capital. You can get almost anything here. Most of the things you see and buy in the retail shops originated from this place. (Of course, that item you bought could have passed through 2-3 middle-men’s hands)

I was "warned" by Echo and Francis that 1 day isn’t enough for Yiwu. Well, I have been to many wholesale centres in Beijing, Shenyang Hangzhou and Shanghai. How "big" can this place be, I thought.

We (Tracy, Echo and myself) drove for 3 hours – passing Jiaxin and Hangzhou – before we reached Yiwu. The minute Echo’s car entered the parking lot, I saw an endless stretch of trucks and cars. I cannot describe the size of this mega-wholesale center. It is almost like our Singapore Expo, Hall 1-6 AND 5 floors up! A local told us that there is an estimated of 25,000-30,000 shops in Yiwu. Guys, it is BIG!

We saw toys, lifestyle products, household items, electronics, car parts, accessories for women, gifts and premiums, craftworks, festive items (xmas, cny) and more! These wholesalers are nice, they welcome you to take photographs of those items that you are interested. Most wholesalers don’t provide you with catalogues or samples that you can take home. So, it is important you have to snap those items you want. Pick up their namecards and record the prices. You may call them back anytime to find out more.

Now the $$$ – Things in Yiwu are generally 500% cheaper than those you see in the retail shops. For example, a 1-foot tall lava lamp will cost you about S$60 at Parkway Parade. It is only selling at S$6 here. (minimum quantity: 50 pcs). A foldable bicycle costs about RMB1,500 in Shanghai, the same model costs only RMB400 (no minimum order!).

Guess I am going to brainwash more friends to accompany me to Yiwu. Kalinda, Meijie, Felicia, Gareth, you guys should come along too! Next time, we should book a hotel room for 2-day stay. Time to book a few containers!
