The Number that Changed the World

"Fear" & "Insecurity" are powerful mechanics. If applied well, one can make lots of money using these mind-controlling device. (Look at sales of weapons, life insurance, anti-virus software etc). People do spend lots of money chasing the concept of "assurance".

Mention this 3-digit number to anyone on the street and picture his/her emotions. 911 is a brand of fear, wars and bloodshed. 911 is a brand that gave a superpower the rights to invade any foreign soils (which pose its national security). 911 is the brand that most government would like to associate itself with – using this opportunity to align itself with the greed-driven superpowers. 911 is the brand blur the lines of freedom fighters and terrorists. 911 gives authority the best excuse to implement anti-human rights act.

911 isn’t just a date for remembrance. It is a concept of branding. Making the man-in-the-street to believe that their lives are no longer safe and the world clearly needs a division between the good and the bad.

Back in 2001 when 911 happened, it took me quite a while to swallow the reality of "terrorism". Why would someone like Osama would launched a personal attack against an superpower? And if Osama isn’t a head of state of a nation, what gives USA the rights to invade countries like Iraq and Afghanistan without consulting the united nations? And what took a superpower so long just to locate one person? Come on, you found Saddam, didn’t you? (Question, Saddam didn’t send those suicide plane-hijackers or has any of those WMD, right?)

On the contrary, if you think like a businessman, you will realise some parties stand to gain more in the long term for waging this global war against a concept call "terrorism". For oil or other blood money (like sales of weapon – inspired by movie "Lord of Wars" by Nicolas Cage), this new economy may just do more good to the superpowers. Imagine other nations started spending more good money to stock-up their defence inventory. Isn’t that how some people suspect the anti-virus business – you released more virus so that people buy your anti-virus product. Of course, this is baseless…but such a possibility..may happen in reality.

Let’s think of the other extreme (like a businessman). It is common for big MNC to cut manpower to improve productivity and introduce new business model. If sacrificing 2 towers and 3,000 lives can propel sales, power and presence, why not just do it? After all, you need an excuse to justify an act of horror. Isn’t that one of the tactics in the Chinese’s 36 Strategies?

5 years have passed and no news of the man who gave 911 a whole new meaning (it should be listed in Oxford dictionary too). The governments around the world are using this beautiful excuses to terrorize their own subjects. If Osama killed 3,000 innocent people on 911. Then, I would say the superpower nation killed more people (including their own soldiers and other civilians) by raging this war on a global scale. What’s more, this gives them an excuse to penetrate any region and regain its dimming "Global Police" status. What’s next? Iran and North Korea? Overnight, our superpower nation is a global hero again.

People are a bunch of forgetful lot. Once in a while, a small bomb will appeared again… like a virus… And this create a reminder for you to renew your belief that you need a "big brother" in this world to protect your safety. You started paying money for the new "anti-virus" program (airport security tax, social support to send in more troops, the acceptance of unlawful imprisonment-without-trial etc). Osama can never be found cos’ if there is no virus, there will be no business. Question is: Who funded these activities and "virus-building"?

Like a staged-drama, SARS & bird flu appeared in a timely fashion when Asia was getting global recognition for its presence as the new Economy and Superpower. While the west was undergoing their activities on "terrorism", the east was undergoing a never-seen-before bio-threat. Are there more than it meets the eye? Surely, cos’ these bio-threats somehow slow down Asia’s progress of being the new leader of the new century. More money to be made? – weapons & vaccines. OR it may just be another coincident…

At the end of the day… it all boils down to "branding". You do not need to hard sell the cold facts to gain presence and money. All you need is a concept and a number – 911 – Celebrating its "5th Year of Fear of Ignorant Acceptance" this week.

I say, cut the bush, end this senseless war, fire Osama and stop killing innocent lives. The numbers just don’t add up. Just wonder why the 2 Bush Presidents so keen to rage wars with Iraq – Perhaps there is a deeper agenda behind that we all dun know. The war against Iraq may never be about 911.

True evil lies in the convincing face which you recognise as friend. (For 2nd view, go watch the other news network or the DVD Fahrenheit 9/11. Watch it with an open mind..dun trust all content. )

The Da Vinci Code may be just a fiction. The mystery about the "Bush & Osama" may be the greatest tale ever told.

Origins of “Common Phase”

We hear it and we say it often.  Most of the time, we dun really care about these "common phase" origins. Here are some good reading for those who like to know.

"Touch Wood"

The origin of the expression is almost certainly connected with a religious belief or superstition, but the exact nature of the belief or superstition is unknown. It may derive from an ancient pagan belief that knocking on a tree was a way to ward off evil spirits, or to call upon protective spirits who supposedly lived in certain trees, especially the oak. Another possible connection is the Christian ritual of touching a wooden crucifix when taking an oath or praying for good fortune. The early Christians may have thought they were touching part of the genuine cross used in the Crucifixion. Later it was thought that touching any wooden crucifix, or part of a crucifix, would confer the same benefits, as would touching any piece of wood that once was part of a sacred tree.  <Souce: (http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20010918)>

"Catch 22"

The expression Catch-22 is derived from the 1961 novel of the same name by Joseph Heller. In the novel, Catch-22 refers to a parodoxical Air Force rule by which a pilot is considered insane if he keeps flying combat missions without formally asking to be relieved, but if he does ask to be relieved, he is judged sane and must keep flying. It is derived from catch ‘a hidden difficulty’. <Source: http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=19980223>

"Peeping Tom"

The name comes from the legend of Lady Godiva’s naked ride through the streets of Coventry, in order to persuade her husband to alleviate the harsh taxes on the town’s poor. The story goes that the townsfolk agreed not to observe Godiva as she passed by, but a tailor named Tom broke that trust and spied on her. <Source: http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/peepingtom?view=uk>

"On Cloud 9"

The true and original origin of "Cloud 9" is derived from Buddhism. The state of being in "Cloud 9" is the penultimate goal of the Bhodisattva.  <Source: http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/18/messages/721.html>

Here is one good site for all of you to read more: http://www.phrases.org.uk
So, dun be a "laughing stock" or "bimbo" – Go find out the origin meaning, huh?

The City of LuthorCorp and Superman

I was watching the TV Series “Smallville” (Season 3) just now when the screen flashed the skyline of “Metropolis” – the place where LuthorCorp lies. It is just an “futuristic impression” scene and normally, I dun give a shit about it. But somehow, something in me tells me to rewind the footage (it is a DVD). So, after 10 minutes, I decided to rewind the scene and pause it.
At first glance, it looks like a normal city landscape. I looked at it for about 1 full minute and I recognised the place.
Haaa…No wonder it looks so familiar to me.
Man, wonder why Hollywood picked this place as “Metropolis” – but it feels good to have a Superman around.

Happy Birthday Singapore

Living abroad didn’t weaken my identity and love being a Singaporean.
On the opposite, it strengthened my love for my country. Afterall, I am reminded by almost everyone (on a daily basis) that I am a Singaporean. On my way to work, the taxi driver would recognise my accent and he would ask “Hong Kong or Taiwan?”. I would answered, “No, I am a Singaporean.”
At work, we Singaporeans would flock together…having lunch, dinner together. And when I travel outside China, I would always stand in the line with the “Ang Moh”. By the time it is my turn, the custom officer would ask “Singaporean?” I love my identity and I am proud to carry one too. If you think in terms of “being a limited Chinese edition”…being a Singaporean Chinese means as much as a ABC. We have our own limited serial number (which is our IC) and our birth rates are falling… It only means that we are collector’s item! (Wow..Echo just got one collector’s item!)
Funny it may seems… It is not about how good Singapore is (which makes me love my nation so much)…to be honest, I say, we are losing steam compared with developing cities like Shanghai. Let us not look into our ever-so-crazy addiction in achieving global rankings and status. These ranking means nothing for a citizen. Perhaps, it may means a lot for a cash-rich foreign investing enterprise. Afterall, you must have one of the world’s best workforces in order to achieve status like this. And I do agree.. Singapore talents are creative, hardworking, honest and dynamic. (Maybe we should polish our manners a little, that is all.)
However, the reality is here. It comes a day when we can no longer claim to have the world’s busiest port or tallest hotel or best airport… The Esplanade and the casino cannot save us at all. In one of my business trip to Macau last week, I was dining with my client when the boss of the outlet sat with us. Knowing I am a Singaporean, he started to tell me about his trip to Singapore.
He said “I have no idea what is so great about Singapore.. There is nothing to see, nothing to play and nothing good to eat. If you want to talk about playing, we have Disneyland in HK, casino in Macau and XXX joints every cities. Your Sentosa is so disappointing!”
“Shopping? Our shopping district is far bigger and better than your Orchard Road. If you want to talk about sight-seeing, we have mountains, rivers and anicent ruins. Your Chinatown and Little India are just gimmicks. And if you talk about the good food, it can’t be compared to China too.”
While this was just a casual talk, I can’t help but to defend my identity. His words, so frank and sharp. I felt like a stupid fool, sitting there, being insulted at blank point. Just before I wanted to defend our national brand, the boss said..
It is the good quality (人的素质)  within the people of Singapore that impress me. Not the tallest building or the tangible things you see.”
Er..what you mean by that?” I asked him in my broken chinese.
Your Singapore Identity  – ever so polite, so gracious and the world class professionalism.” He said. “These are the things we cannot build overnight.”
I understood what he meant. For the next 30 minutes, we chatted like old friends.. chatting about my days in Shanghai and how he started his business.
Today is 9th August – our National Day. I clearly remember those days when I would hang out my flag outside the window. Year after year, the red and white would just hanged out for 1 month outside my window.. I have never give so much thought about my identity and origin. Now, I can fully understand why Martin was so crazy creating that “Stickapura” campaign. It is an identity we take for granted back home. Like the American, we do have a dream worth chasing for.
We just need to remember who we are. Our roots, our values and our dream.
Happy Birthday, Singapore!

Reunion & Departure

Haven’t been able to log on into my blog for the past week. Mr MSN Space decided to go ahead with their own renovation works without giving us (the tenant) any prior notice… Afterall, the landlord doesn’t really care about "user’s experience". This is not the first time my "bloglord" disrupted my blog doing upgrades.. Yes, I do appreciate the free upgrades and free perks but DO GIVE ME A WARNING! For the past 1 week, I have so much difficulties logging into my own blog. Urghh.. so much good thoughts dried up unrecorded…Sigh, blame it on my short-term memory… I can’t remember those "thoughts" anymore… (which unfortunately, also includes the chinese version of "quickie" that Sam wanna so much!)

This is what I wrote last week. (I only managed to upload this today) Enjoy.

Reunion & Departure

I never like the airport. No.. it isn’t about my aerophobia. It is the contrast of feelings I had whenever I am at the airport. The arrival hall is often filled with joys and happinese and the departure gate is always such a gloomy one. Unlike a movie theatre or a theme-park, you walked in happy and you came out a happier/motivated soul.

I was in Hong Kong last week (26-30th July) for a business trip. Both Feli and Elkan took this opportunity and flew up to meet me. It was God’s gift – I am so glad that they were with me. I was having a bad fever (38.5) and backache – somehow, their presence really helped to lift up my spirits and gave me the strength to fulfill my business needs.

Still, it was a good reunion for 3 of us. Despite the constant rain (for 3 days), we spent good quality time together. We went to a couple of "well-known" places in HK – the Ocean Park, Lan Gui Fang etc.

I really noticed a lot of changes in my son…Elkan is more "responsive" now (he can say simple words like "car, no, daddy, mummy, dun want"… He is more like a boy than a baby now. It is good to see Elkan developing his own personality and character…Still remember that moment when we first met, it took quite a while for both of us to break the ice – afterall, we have been apart for 3 months! It feels so good to have him in my arms again… His lovely angelic eyes took all those stress and loneliness away from me. How I wish I can take him back to Shanghai with me…

When it is time to say goodbye.. it was heart-breaking. It is a very difficult feeling to describe..kinda heavy and sad. At the departure gate, I gave Feli and Elkan one last hug and kiss. Feli asked Elkan to kiss "daddy" – he gave me a kiss on the forehead… I was so close to tears.

Just like the last time (back in May), I have to "sneaked away" fast so that Elkan won’t cry for me. Or maybe this time, it was me who may cry out for them. I dun know, I just dun have the courage to look at their departing shadows. No waving, no saying goodbyes, we just parted the easiest way.. never take a glance back.

Leaving Gate 2, I took a long lonely walk to Gate 5 – where my plane is waiting for me (to Shanghai). With tears in my heart and smile on my face, I recalled the moment when we first met in Hong Kong. Surely, there will be another moment like this soon.

Till we meet again, my boy. 🙂

Lost in Translation II

Guess I was too "deep" in my last blog entry. Haaa.. Here is something for those who are visiting me this year.

Please learn it by heart before you ever come to China! Well, being a chinese in Singapore doesn’t mean you are a chinese in China. I am still found myself "lost in translation" sometimes.. (Hmmp..maybe it is easy for some of you…But I bet even Siow Wei doesn’t know all of these!)

Lost in Translation

When man learns to walk, it gives him a new sense of confidence to roam and explore freely. Perhaps it is a sense of freedom.

Throughout our life journey, we choose our own path and pace. God gives man the freedom to walk but he leaves man to choose his own directions. Fate is nothing but a compass. We walk our own destiny.

Because we are never meant to be stationary – does it mean that we have a higher chance of getting lost? Or rather, if we are trees, rooted ourselves in the middle of a jungle, does it mean that we have found our spot and can never be lost.

At times, when I am given the opportunity to choose (at the cross-roads), I often felt lost and uncertain. Cos’ I am always making mental sum on which is the best direction to go. Perhaps, there is no such thing like a "best direction"?

I love travelling on a straight road. I dun mind the straight road being bumpy, rocky, sharp bended curves or even full of potholes.. At least, I know I have only one way ahead. Be it day or night, rain or shine, there is only one direction that I need to focus. The only thing I need to decide is my own pace.. it doesn’t matter if it is fast or slow.. I will get there anyway..

You see, there can never be too wrong to pick a wrong pace… However, sometimes we have to pay a heavy toll if we picked a wrong path. That is when we got confused and lost. We all know that there are some routes in life that don’t allow a U-turn. And there are cross-roads that share similar fate but contrasting destiny.

What do we do when we are lost? Most of us would stop walking, leave that confusing place and try to find a clearer road. And what is a clearer road? A road without cars? Or a road with lots of signs? What if we can’t find that clearer road and ended up being "more lost"? Then again, how can one be "more lost" when he is lost?

When you are lost, you wish to see someone familar on the same road as you. Cos’ you know that familar face is going to lead you out of the lost state of mind. The "best direction" mentality doesn’t apply here anymore. You just want to get out.

I am not lost… In fact, I have a clear path ahead of me.. However, I have just took a left turn and found myself standing in an interchange of fate and destiny. Sitting near the information booth, I saw a line of people feeling lost…praying for a sign. I wish I can lead them but I know whichever direction I point is going to affect a chain of events and destiny.

Feeling really heavy and helpless, perhaps, it is best that I get back to my own road.
Like what my creative director has said, it is good to fly with a string attached sometimes, at least you can control your high and lows. A kite without a string can never take flight. A kite with a broken string will eventually falls.

No Mood for Blog

I have tried to type in something for my blog this week.. but I just can’t get my words out. Feeling so moody and down.

It has been a very bad week for me. I was down at the local Shanghai hospital with a very bad fever, cough, flu and throat-infection… And coincidently, my son was admitted to (Singapore) hospital for the wrong reason. He got himeself a deep cut on his forehead and needed stitches.

When Felicia called me on Wed about Elkan’s fall, I was feeling so down and desperate… Here am I, feeling so sick and lousy..and at the same time, I felt so helpless and pissed that I couldn’t be with Elkan. Things just fell apart at one go and it’s  just so damn frustrating putting them back in place.

Thanks to the internet and my IP phone. I felt so assured when Chups sent me those photos of Elkan. Felicia called twice to re-assure me that my son is doing well. I was at that very edge to come home immediately. Pardon my language, but really, fuck the responsibility here… my family and loved ones matter to me most.

Wanna to hug Elkan so much… Somehow, his fall has made me so homesick.. Thanks to Tracy, Meijie, Joanne, Duuk, Juliana & Kalinda…visiting Elkan and giving him so much love.

And thanks to Yixi… your comments and jokes on my blog kinda cheer me up. 🙂

The toll is heavy.. I just have to endure for a while more. I am coming home soon.

An Island Mall

I have great love and respect for this island of ours. It is
unique, beautiful and most importantly, homely. Our island has enjoyed
its golden era of prosperity, peace and progress. Sadly, many islanders
felt that the island has reached its peak and it is on its way down the
peak. I firmly believe there is hope and future for our island.

Imagine running our island
like a mall.
To attract good crowd (EDB), we got to
build the best accessibility to the mall. Boosted by its natural
geographical location, we have built one of the world’s best airport
(Changi) and seaport (PSA). Beside the mega-structures, we have to open
more routes in/out of the island (SIA). Create a pleasant entrance,
speed up our porters’ handlings, and attract more carriers to park at
our terminals…Bingo! You have the crowd now.

With good location, 24/7 routes, major carriers, free
entry…there shouldn’t be any problem attracting crowds to the mall. But
first, we should attract big retailers who can afford to bring in strong
presence of goods / services (APPLE, IBM, Xerox, Microsoft). Make the
mall an interchange of trades, ideas and cultures. Big retailers are
able to boast the mall’s economy, raise employment and attract crowds.

The mall must be managed by a group of professional (PAP).
First, they must brand the mall well (UNIQUE SINGAPORE). Create an
unique identity about the mall… Make the mall a clean (NEA), safe (SCDF,
SAF, POLICE FORCE), friendly (COURTESY CAMPAIGN), beautiful
(N-PARK) and happy place to be in – for the islanders, the retailers and
the visitors. Set rules, recruit enforcers – so that our mall branding
will be closely followed and practiced.

To entice the retailers, we have to offer big space to them.
Rub their egos, offer free rentals or low-rate packages to keep them for
a long time. Support them with good workers (MOE). Train our natural
resources – the islanders. Identify what kinds of retailers (niche,
profitable ones) that the mall wishes to host – then mould our islanders
into the suitable resources. Education is the best resource maker.

When the space, the price and the human resources are ideal,
the big retailers will start taking up shops in the mall. The retailers
will start employing the islanders…and Bingo! The island is alive with
economic growth. Improve the tenants’ experience, make sure all
facilities within the mall are the best (SMRT, SINGTEL, PUB).

The mall needs to advertise (STB), run promotions to attract
shoppers to the retail shops. Let’s organize (SING-EXPO,
SUNTEC) festivals (food, arts, fashion), shows (aerospace, IT),
conventions and exhibitions. Bingo! Send invitation to the crowd and
they will come to the mall. Expand the mall with good hotel rooms,
attractions (outdoor and indoor), food joints – these are things that
keep our guest occupied and happy.

In the next 20 years, we need to set aside money upgrading our
mall (all aspect, not just the infrastructure…focus on the human
factor). We need to attract more world class retailers to retain our
crowd. As long as there are crowd, there will be employment, business
and growth. Perhaps, it is a good time to setup a good theater
(ESPLANADE), a casino and theme-park (SENTOSA) inside the mall.

The mall is revitalizing (NEW
FLOORS ADDED: EDU-HUB, SPA-HUB, MEDI-HUB, BIOPOLIS, DESIGN HUB, FILM
HUB, CASINO).
It is a good time to reward its workers
(SINGAPORE SHARES). The mall will now set aside annual packages for its
citizens. Afterall, the islanders deserved the remunerations and bonus.
Why? Cos’ everyone worked together on a common goal, sharing the same
destiny with the Mall.

What’s going to happen in the next 10 years? Let’s renovate and
innovate the mall. There are many similar malls like ours out there. We
have lost a few big retailers to these malls. Those malls offer bigger
crowd, free rental and more goodies. Sadly, we cannot move this mall to
the crowd. We must always find ways to attract the crowd. At the same
time, we cannot afford to lose any big retailers… Take good care
(FREE TRADE, QUALITY MANPOWER) of the retailers…cos’ without them,
there will be no crowd.

While we are always on the constant look out for retailers…it
is time to create our own local retailers. Park our home grown retailers
to other big malls out there (IE SINGAPORE). Give our home-grown
retailers (CREATIVE, TIGER BEER, OSIM) more support (SPRING). Instead of
training our islanders to tend shops (WDA, NTUC) in our mall, guide
them to open retail shops in other malls.

Offer to setup malls for our neighbors (INDIA, DUBAI, CHINA).
Strike a good partnership and hold shares in their new malls. Park our
best and loyal islanders in these overseas joint. It is time to multiply
like Starbucks.

Mall Singapore has a good future. It is time to take care of
our retired islanders who have done well for the past 30 years.

5th May – It is Official

The official date has just been confirmed. Come 5th May 2006, I will be flying off to Shanghai for my new attachment.

Many have came to ask me so many questions – why the quick and firm decision to go. I am 100% sure about the potential of this move. But I just not 100% sure about the impact I caused due to my sole decision. Honestly, it took me less than 24 hours to make that decision to go. It isn’t a very difficult decision to make. Shanghai is certanly "the place" to be in – China has been opening and growing since mid-1990s. In fact, I would like to be there to witness China’s golden era of economic thrusts. From now till 2010, there are so many things to witness and learn.

What’s difficult is leaving my attachments behind… my fellowship at Caffeine Group, my lovely 2 girls, my cozy home, my pet Jaja, my parents, my Wahbiang friends and most importantly, bobo and elkan. The last 2 weeks were bad and heavy-hearted for me. I began to feel the impact of the new reality. The changes around me were emotionally drastic.  I never know my sole decision can affect so many things around me.

Will I look back and undo my decision? No, I am 100% sure of that. Is it worth to leave all these attachments behind for a personal gain? Not at all, it is a totally selfish act. Is it for fame, money or status? None of the 3 – I just need an adventure. To explore my limits. Nothing else.

Like a pebble hitting still water, I started seeing the ripple-effects. So many questions on my head… I really have no idea how to face them or answer them. Things in office and my personal life are moving too fast. I have no time to ponder and procrastinate. Just want to go along with the flow (of the new events) and let the answers surface themselves.

Did I leave a mess behind? NO, I left a legacy.  In fact, I had everything perfectly in place before my departure. My business, my family…they are all in place.

So, the next questions are "how long" and "how far"? These are the only 2 questions I am very eager to find out. Certainly not "how much" and "how to".

Will there ever be regret? Yes….. if I leave Elkan behind.
